Why is it that I blow on my coffee to cool it down, but I blow on my fire to heat it up???

I Love Coffee. I Love Repurposing. I Love My New Coffee Bar!
A couple weeks ago I was Pinterest-surfing when I saw a fabulous kitchen idea: a coffee bar.
I became slightly obsessed with creating my very own coffee bar in my very own kitchen.
I looked at what seemed like dozens of versions. Most of the ones I liked featured the same shelf. I looked it up and was shocked at its price tag: $120. No way in tarnation I was going to pay anything like that for what was merely a fun little corner of my kitchen, not a "must-have".
So I looked around my house and found I had a shelf that would fill my needs perfectly. It was just sitting there on the wall, serving no purpose other than holding a few "pretties" as my dear grandmother used to call them.
So down it came. Toasters were moved, blenders were relocated, the coffee pot was set up in its new home. The shelf got mounted above the coffee maker, and quickly filled with my filter canister, tins for coffee and tea, shakers for sugar and chocolate and cinnamon. I bought some shower curtain hooks for the towel bar and hung up the coffee mugs.
The piece that I was missing was a chalkboard coffee shop sign.
I couldn't find what I needed in the right size. Then one day, walking through Walmart, I saw poster board and such. There was a piece of black foam board in the exact dimensions I wanted. I found a picture of a sign I liked on Google images, and went to work with my chalk. It still needs a frame, but overall I'm pleased with how it came out.
The best part of my coffee bar? Other than the hooks and the foam board, it didn't cost me a thing.
I love it!

Weight Loss Wednesday
I had to skip my Weight Watcher's meeting last week due to the minor inconvenience of having my body ravaged by an ungodly flu-like illness.

So I went last night with dread. I knew I'd gained. After all, I had gone from walking 20 - 25 miles per week to walking 20 - 25 steps a week. My appetite had diminished, true, but when I did feel like eating, gone was the resolve to put together something healthy, like a nice salad. Instead, I grabbed what was quick and easy. Cereal. Some toast. A bagel. Carbs and I became reacquainted. We were like long lost chums sitting down to catch up over a cup of coffee.
I was afraid, very afraid, to step on that scale.
But happy day, happy day, I lost another two pounds!
Total to date: 28.4 pounds down.
I had hoped to lose 30 pounds by the end of September, but I guess I'll have to settle for a week late.
And I can share a lesson learned here: if you're trying to lose some weight, be prepared for illness. Keep some healthy and easy-to-stomach foods on hand such as soup, crackers, and ..... oh I don't even know what else. I'm still thinking of my carbs. I miss them so.
Anyway, that's it for this week. For any of you also on the weight loss path, hope you're doing well. Let me know how things are going for you!
And for anyone just joining in, you can read what I've written on this subject previously right here:
Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
Week 4
Week 5
Week 6
Week 7
Week 8
Week 9
Till next week, happy weight loss!!
And PS: Don't forget to keep checking out my son's blog. He'll be writing it for one month!

Walking With Coffee
Resurrection of a post from my old blog....
Back in my high school and college days (and thankfully never again after that), I waitressed at a number of diners and restaurants to earn some cash.
When I began, I knew nothing. I did not know how to start the morning coffee pots in the ancient and enormous 4-pot machine. I did not know how to quickly and accurately make change without the aid of a register or calculator. I was not able to carry more than two plates at a time; certainly not the six plates I would learn to carry later (all without a tray).
And I did not know how to carry a cup of coffee without spilling half of it before I arrived at the table.
I would walk very gingerly, biting my lip, staring intently at the cup; but it seemed the more I stared, the more I concentrated, the more I spilled.
One day, when things were slow, one of the more seasoned waitresses saw me walking along in this way, staring at the coffee, willing it not to spill. Coffee delievered, I returned to the break table and took a seat next to AnnaMarie. She was the same one who had taught me how to make change by counting backwards and I thought she was a goddess.
"What was that?" she said.
"What was what?"
"Why were you walkin' like that? You looked like you were walkin' on egg shells."
"I didn't want to spill the coffee."
"Yeah, well, you walk like that yer gonna spill half of it before you ever get to the table."
"But I'm walking as carefully as I can, what else am I supposed to do?"
"Don't look at it at all."
"If I don't look at it, how'm I s'pposed to know if it's spilling?"
"It won't. Just look where yer headin' and the coffee will stay in the cup without any help from you. Trust me."
And so I tried it. And it was really hard. Not to not spill the coffee, but to not look. Everytime I decided to sneak a peek at the cup to see how I was doing, that coffee would commence sloshing around in the cup, invariably spilling out into its saucer. But the times I didn't look? I arrived at the table with a pristine saucer.
Thankfully I haven't waitressed in years. I never did grow to like it, job-wise. However, I cannot say I didn't learn from it.
I learned to prioritize. When one table needed their check, another needed their dinners brought out, another needed to be cleared and set, another needed to give their order and yet another just needed a simple refill, I learned the hard way I couldn't do it all, at least not all at the same time. This lesson was applied again and again in motherhood.
I learned simple math. Not that I didn't learn it the first time in school, I just never learned how to apply it to real-life situations until I waitressed.
I learned a few other things, as well, like karma. If you can smile and be pleasant even when you're bone tired, things (read tips) will tend to work in your favor.
But probably the biggest lesson learned was to not watch the coffee. And while I mean this literally, the bigger lesson was the metaphoric one. Isn't it always?
I've learned that sometimes, most times, the more attention you give your problems, the bigger they become. Turns out the best way to handle many of life's little curve balls is just to not fret over them. They have a way of working themselves out.
Now, if your sink is spewing forth brown liquid of unknown origin, or your car is telling you she's thirsty for some oil, perhaps you need to face those problems head-on.
But if your kid is playing around instead of studying for her science test, guess what? She will do poorly on the test, feel bad about it, and the next time she will remember to study. That's not to say you can't give her reminders and ensure she has the time and space in her schedule to study, but beyond that, it's her problem, not yours. Give that problem more attention than it needs and instead of a resouceful, independent, self-motivator, you will have a child (and someday-adult) who expects all her problems to be solved for her.
If the kids are bickering over whose turn it is? Resist the urge to step in and solve the dilemma for them. Chances are, you will overinvolve yourself, giving the problem more attention than it needs, and that coffee will be spilled, I guarantee it. Let it work itself out. The kids will learn to negotiate. If it escalates to bloodshed, you will be the first to know and you can step in and save the day.
What did the classroom-party-committee-Mom mean by that remark, how come your bff didn't return your call, why did your husband put those electric tweezers in your stocking last Christmas? You can turn those questions over and over in your mind, stress about them and overanalyze them till you've found meaning where there was none.
Or....
You could walk on through life, focusing on the big picture instead of all the minute details that surround you. That stuff will work itself out with no help from you.
Like AnnaMarie said,
Just look where yer headin' and the coffee will stay in the cup without any help from you. Trust me.

Chicken-Scratch-Saturday: Hot Coffee
Keeping Your Coffee Hot
Are your mugs cool to the touch when you take them out of the cabinet? Does your morning cup o' Joe cool off too quickly for your liking?
Try this tip...
Before filling the mug with life-replenishing coffee, fill it with water and microwave it for a minute or so. Then dump out the boiling water and fill with coffee. It'll keep nice and hot for you as you sip your way to consciousness.

Coffee Clatch
Here's a little somethin' I posted on my old blog a while back. Thought I would dust it off and post it here....
*******

I have coffee with friends on Friday mornings. It's the highlight of my week, quite frankly. To talk with adults, as adults, when day in-day out you're surrounded by parasitic humans with a poopload of demands on you is a treat worth savoring.
But we haven't always enjoyed this companionship liberated from our children. In fact, when we first met, it was through our local MOMS Club. We all wore similar shell-shocked expressions as we shuffled through the meeting room of the church, one whining toddler clinging to our legs, one screaming infant slung across a hip, our boobs swollen and sore, bags under our sleepless eyes, but yet with a Barbie smile plastered across our faces that said to the world, "Holy crap, I'm really enjoying this!"
Truth be told, our conversations today still fall under the same categories they did so many years ago, but the subtext has changed.....
2012 (Sipping coffee) Hey Sarah, how's it goin'? Oh my God, I love your new bag...
2000 (Wiping up juice)....diaper bag. Where'd you get it?
2000 Oh, thanks, you like it? I got it at Babies-R-Us.....
2012 ....TJ Max. It's kinda small but it holds what I need. Look, it's got
this cool little compartment that holds my i-pod.....
2000 .....poopy diapers. And I love the size. It was the biggest one there.
2000 Hey Theresa, will you be coming over for Story and Craft on Thurs morning...
2012 ....wine and cheese on Fri night? NOOOO, leave the kids at home, have you lost your friggin' mind....
2000 .....day planner? Don't you remember? Third Thurs of every month is Story and Craft. Second Thurs is Gymboree and fourth Thursday is Toddler Time at the library.
2000 Hey guys, I was just at a Creative Play demonstration and I bought the most fantastic thing for Johnny. It's designed for babies 6 - 9 mths of age and it enhances their depth perception, tracking, and gross motor coordination. I know I spent too much but I'm sure it will be worth every penny....
2012 .... of his allowance goes to video games. I used to moderate what he played more, but honestly? If he's quiet? I almost don't care if he rots his brain.
2000 Thanks for asking, it was a big hit. She just loved the princess party. I made each of the guests a princess skirt from pink tulle and they made wands and tiaras for the craft and the cake was a huge castle. They loved the pony rides, too. It's not every day a little girl turns three, right?
2012 So he's asking if it can be a boy-girl party and they wanna hang out in the basement so they can "play video games", haha. I swear he thinks I just crawled out from under a rock or something.
2000 Guess what, his tooth finally came in! We were all just so excited when...
2012 I felt around in my mouth and can finally feel all my teeth again. I'm so glad I sprung for that implant. I hated having a hole where my tooth should've been.
2012 Sue, on your shoulder. You've got some omelette...
2000 ....vomit on your shirt.

2000 ....vomit on your shirt.

In case you didn't know it, I'm like the queen of blog-hoppin' lately. It's kind of like square dancing but without the dated outfits, smelly gym, and elderly caller.
Here's the schedule I keep:
Monday: Homestead Revival's Barn Hop and A Cat-Like Curiosity's Monday Mantras.
Tuesday: Heavenly Homemaker's Gratituesday
and Wrinkled Mommy's Tuesday Archive Link-Up
Wednesday: My Life and Kids Finding the Funny
Thursday: A Rural Journal's Rural Thursday Blog Hop
Friday: Deborah Jean's Dandelion House's Farmgirl Friday
Saturday: Camera Critter's Life With Dogs Pet Blogger Hop and Country Momma Cooks Saturday Link-Up
Since today is Saturday, that means I'm linking my post "Meat-n-Greet"
with Country Momma Cooks Saturday Link-Up, and with Camera Critter's Life With Dogs Pet Blogger Hop.
Come join the fun!
