Filling in the Gaps: Divorce and Moving

In January 2015, I wrote a post I titled "Coming Clean".  Here is the bulk of that post (edited down just a bit), which kind of summarizes the changes I had faced to that point:

Although I'd never shied away from writing about the stressful things in my life, there seemed to be a shift.  I felt like if I were to continue writing about the daily goings on under my roof, it would be less how-to from a Mom who'd been-there-done-that, and more Jerry Springer.

Writing about PTSD and trauma and RAD of my young children, in the vein of venting and commiserating and also educating?  What's wrong with that?

Writing about misdemeanors of now adult children?  Not so easy to go there.

Writing about the fall-out of parenting children with mental illness, trauma-based or otherwise? It's all in the name of keeping it real.

Writing about 911 calls, paramedics, police, questioning neighbors, in-patient admissions?  We've moved on to a different realm.

And aside from the parental side of my life, there's the marital.  How does one write about a separation after 26 years of marriage and not feel just wrong on so many levels?  There's privacy to think about, my kids to think about, my feelings, his feelings, trying to figure out how I feel/he feels/where we stand from one day to the next.  How do you write about that sh**?

Although I know first-hand all that is wrong with "wearing a mask", it is something I have been guilty of.

Nothing to see here!  We're just one big happy family that managed to go from three kids to four through international adoption of a special-needs child, then from four kids to six with the addition of two older internationally adopted kids with mental health issues including RAD, PTSD and more!  Woo hoo! Plus my husband and I were high school sweethearts!  We can weather ANY storm, right?

Holding that image up for all to see is a disservice to me, to my family, to my readers.

If I can't write on my blog that it's ok that we are where we are, how am I going to convince my kids?  How am I going to sell it to myself?

The truth is, it IS ok.

It's ok that two of my three adopted kids have had their lives dominated by the fallout of the trauma-born mental illness that is often part of the fabric of the lives of adopted children.  I have dealt with those issues with dignity, compassion, and love.  I have been able to tell my children that no matter what they do, I will always love them, even when their actions have caused me to take drastic measures such as eviction, filing charges, hospital admissions, outpatient programs, residential treatment facilities.  It means I love them enough to do whatever it takes to help them become the best persons they can be, even when they may feel that my actions prove just the opposite.

It's ok that life is difficult for the entire family when one of my children (one that's wearing my genes) is dealing with the ramifications of his own mental illness demons.  He didn't ask for it.  My husband and I, given our unique genetic histories, should never have spawned children.  It was the perfect storm. What the family has gone through in dealing with his (and the others) sequellae have stretched us to the limit.  I love my kids for their resilience, their flexibility, their adaptability, their compassion.

It's ok that my husband and I may not have a happily-ever-after marriage.  It just means that we're honest enough with each other that we can attempt to deal with it, that we can own up to having problems, and we can have the courage to try to fix them.  I can't tell you how things will end with us.  All I know is that we're trying to figure out if we have what we need to make our marriage succeed.  The answer may be yes, and it may be no.  Right now the answer is elusive, but I pray that God will show us the answer in His own time.

I am proud of myself for having weathered so much, and to still have the strength I need to deal with problems as they continue to surface.  Let's face it, my life is one big Whac-a-Mole game, and I have to keep sharp and quick in noticing the issues and dealing with them as they arise.  Have you ever watched someone playing Whac-a-Mole?  Their face is always a mixture of both fun and determination. I've got to keep that smile on my face and have fun.

It's life.
It's MY life.

And it is what it is.

It's hard to believe I wrote that more than five and a half YEARS ago!  So, just to bring you up to speed, here is a brief summary of what's happened between that post and now:

  • I dabbled in my own business, Birdsong Bits and Pieces, creating art, decor, and refinishing furniture.
  • James moved out, first to live with my sister in NJ, but when he burned that bridge, on to NY.
  • Started the process of divorce.
  • Fixed up the house with a good bit of help from my friends, to put it on the market.
  • My Mom was given a few months to live, went into hospice care, and died at home with her children around her.
  • Rosie went off to college.
  • Bought a new smaller house, a few miles from the old one.
  • Plans for selling the farmhouse changed: Fred moved back in to the big house with Daniel.
  • I fixed up and moved into my new house with Patrick, Julie, Bella, (plus a friend of theirs that moved in with us), and Rosie when she was home from school.
  • My daughters' friend moved out.  Julie started going through another round of new problems, culminating in let's just say drama of many varieties.  New ground rules were set that she had to meet or move out.  She moved out.
  • James was brought back home when things got really bad for him in NY.  He seemed to be getting things straightened out here, but sadly has fallen off the rails again.  He is currently (and it breaks my heart to say this) in jail.
  • The divorce was finalized.
  • I have a new job (still in the field of Occupational Therapy, doing home health care) with a great company that pays well and provides benefits even though I'm only part time.
  • And as you may know, I've gone through a bunch of health issues this year (which resulted in four hospital admissions and countless tests and procedures), including surgery to remove a weirdly positioned stone up in my liver, pancreatitis, and open heart surgery.
And that catches us up on the big picture items.  I'm in my new house with Patrick (commuting to college and working part time), Rosie (who with any luck will be doing a semester as a student teacher this fall to finish up her college education), and Bella (who is working at Goodwill).  Julie is, for the time being, living with Fred, as is Daniel.

Thank you for letting me catch you up!
On my next update I will take you through a tour of my house, that I am very much in love with. Can't wait to show you!

I-Need-Therapy-Thursday: Sniffng the Vomit.

My youngest came to me yesterday morning before school, holding up a wad of papertowels soaked with a nasty, brownish substance.

"Mom? I threw up. But I cleaned it up."

He walked to the kitchen trash can and threw it out.

I lifted the lid, reached in and pulled out the paper towels.
I held it up to my face and took a big whiff.

insert sound of needle scratching across record

What the...?

See folks, there's a backstory here.

This particular child of mine is, let's say, not fond of school.

In the past he has duped me (more than once, shame on me) into believing he was sick enough to miss school. Here are a few of his tactics:

*Fever: warmed his head with a space heater
*Diarrhea: put Hershey's cocoa powder in the toilet and swirled it around
*Vomiting: held water in his mouth (he can even talk a little bit this way) and then spit it up on the drive to school after it had been properly thickened with saliva.

Oh and there's more. Trust me, there's more.

So obviously, my instinct to sniff the vomit had merit.

The result?

Cinnamon and water.

It looked good. Pretty realistic. Who knew? The kid's got talent.

If only he could use his powers for good instead of evil....

Sunday Social - Pippin

Next one down on my siggy line...

Anne,
Wife of Fred for 23 years
Mom of:
Patrick (17)
James (17)
Rosie (14)
Bella(14)
Julie (14)
Daniel (12)
My children around the world:
Milly in Taiwan
Eun Hae in South Korea
Felice in Hong Kong
Nadya in Germany
Obrin in New York
And our critters Blue, Sunny, Cindy-Lou, Annabelle, Fiona, and Sophie; Mamfy, Mali, Milky and Punkin; Nick; Frog 1; Charlie and Dizzy; Minnie and Alice; Elfie, Frex, Crope, Tibbett and Ozzy; Genevieve, Pippin and Finnegan; and a dozen or so chooks.

I'd like to ask God why He allows
hunger, poverty, and injustice
in the world, but I'd be afraid
He'd ask me the same thing ...

Is Pippin.

Isn't he the cutest thing ever?

Ok, I know he's not really cute, in the definitive sense.

He's got a Roman nose. His blaze is all crooked and broken and splotchy. He's high in the hindquarters. Where he used to be a glistening black with white socks and blaze, he's now turning grey. And not in a dignified, elegant, salt and pepper way, but in a what's-going-on-with-his-coat way. He looks awful. I'm sure he's headin' for all grey, like his Mama, but for now he is...not very attractive.

But he's still cute. Cute b/c of his personality
his equinality????
He's sweet and funny and much more like most dogs I've known than most horses I've known.

He's a "pocket pony", meaning he'll follow you around the pasture if you're out making fence repairs or what-not.

He came as a package deal when we bought Genevieve back about 2 1/2 years ago. He was about 6 mths old at the time, and just as friendly back then as he is now. Gen is his Mama, and a strikingly handsome Gypsy Cob (aka Gypsy Vanner) is his Papa, so that makes Pip 1/2 Gypsy, 1/4 Percheron and 1/4 Welsh. He's pony-sized, standing, I'm guessing, at about 14 hh, or maybe 13.5 (just eye-ballin').

He's Daniel's pony, and in theory, he's been training him.

In actuality, we haven't gotten out there to work with him a whole heck of a lot, as one thing or another always seems more pressing than pony-training time. Still, he's doing well, and I think he's only a couple lessons away from being able to be ridden whenever the kids feel like jumpin' aboard. As you would probably expect from what I've already said about him, he's been incredibly easy to train. Wonderful ground manners, and took to a saddle and rider like a fly takes to poo.

Just like his Mama, this one's a keeper.

Farm Friday - Weaning Time

About this time last year, I had to go through the process of getting my colt Finnegan weaned from his Mama.

Although many horsey-folk prefer to do this by shipping one or the other off to board somewhere for a month, I don't like doing things that way. Having nursed babies myself, I thought the whole thing just sounded too stressful for all parties involved (yes, myself included).

So what I did was just keep Genevieve separated in a pen where she and her baby could still see and hear each other, but he wouldn't have access to the 24/7 milk bar.

And it worked out quite well. Have a look....

So the weaning process is still ongoing. And Mama and son are both doing well. Some crying and pacing, to be sure, but they're dealing.

But doing things this way does mean more work.

I have to pitch hay out to Genevieve since she no longer has access to the barn.

I (meaning my kids) have to haul buckets of water out to refill her water tub, because the hose won't reach that far.

And I have to milk her every now and then.

**cricket cricket **

I said I have to milk her every now and then.

See, her udder is still producing milk, it just has nowhere to go. So after a day of no 800lb baby slurpin' down his breakfast, lunch and dinner, the milk just builds up till her bag is tight and uncomfortable.

So I milk her just a bit to take the pressure off. Just enough to make her more comfortable. Plus this will fool her body into thinking that's all the milk she needs to make, so it will start to produce less on the next go round.

But Daniel was helping me feed her a couple mornings ago when he saw me reach up under her belly and start yanking on her teats.

Uhhh, Mom....?

Yes dear?

What are you doing?

I'm milking Genevieve.

Why?(See above)

He just watched with a mixture of horror and fascination for a minute, then shook his head and walked back to the house.

I think I need to add this to the chore list!!! I can just see their faces now when they discover that their weekly chores might include emptying the dishwasher, mowing the lawn, and milking the horse.

Oh, this is brilliant. I gotta go. I need to find my dry erase markers and start making some changes on the chore board.

A Guest Post

My son has been asking me to look into this Kony character and post something about it on my blog.

I finally got around to pulling up the video clip yesterday. When I saw that it was 20-some minutes long, I had a conversation with myself. It went like this:

Me: You need to watch it. It's important.
Me: Whine, whine, whine. I don't have time. I've got 6 kids and a passle of critters to take care of and whine, whine, whine.
Me: Knock it off and suck it up. You say you care about kids. MAKE time.
Me: What are you gonna give me if I watch it?
Me: You get to respect yourself in the morning. Just hush up and watch it already.

And so I watched it. And wow. The folks spearheading this movement are incredible and are really going to stop this guy.

I asked my baby (OK, so he's 12 years old, he's still my baby) to write a little intro for it.

Take it away, Daniel.....

Hi, my name is Daniel. I was in school, and my peers started to move to the area designated, 'The Media Room'. I followed, and my friend Pheobe started a video titled, 'Kony 2012'. I started watching while everyone around me cried, and I was deeply moved by this half hour, saddening, viral video. I ask everyone who is reading this (with money to spare) to donate to the cause of ridding the world of Joseph Kony!

From March 30th, 2009

Parenting Humor
A visiting friend saw Daniel in his habitual morning pose of being curled up in a fetal position on his kitchen stool, butt and toes facing the oven. Oven door open, heat cranked up.
She said, "Good morning Daniel. Whay are you sitting like that?"
"Cuz I'm cold" he replied.
"Well, why don't you put on a shirt and some socks?" (logical question, I'll admit).
Without skipping a beat or looking up from his pose, Daniel answered:
"Because I can't afford such luxuries in my life".

Another Daniel-ism
Daniel had asked at dinner if he could have soda, but the answer was no. Later he saw Patrick fixin' himself a root beer float for dessert. He asked me if he could have one, too. I told him he certainly could. After only the slightest pause he said,
"Can I have a root beer float without the ice cream?"

3rd child to come into my family.
6th in birth order.

My only redhead.

My baby.

MY BABY.

Oh I love this kid.

Funny?

Oh my.

He's also creative and, uh, unique. I never know what this child is going to say next.

His Christmas wish list last year? It included a Tempurpedic mattress and a poncho.

He has a penchant for wearing hats of all sorts. And boots.

When he was about nine years old, I lost him for a few minutes in a book store. I said to the clerk,

"I can't find my son. He's about this high, he has red hair and freckles, and he's wearing an elf hat." It was not Christmas time.

He's super smart. Like, scary smart. He has an idea journal in which he has all these intricate sketches for machines of all sorts. He has big plans for how to provide desert areas with clean water, how to create a Mars colonization breather, spaceships, jetpacks, cars that run on water....

His knowledge of geography and history far surpasses mine. He is 12.

I remember taking him to our school for his Kindergarten screening the spring before he started school. He came clomping into the school in his boots and yelled out to everyone he met (and they all knew him by name, though he was not yet a student there) "I'm here for my Kindergarten screaming and I'm gonna do the best I can!"

I have had more than one teacher tell me that when they get home, their spouse asks them to share the latest from Mr. Daniel.

He is an amazing writer and if he could stick with something for more than a heartbeat, he could probably publish a novel. Like now.

He has dabbled in soccer and gymnastics, and took Kung Fu long enough to get his orange sash and then decided he had had enough of that.

He loves video games, reading books like his 40,000 page book on the universe, and drawing (he is, among so many other things, a gifted artist).

When I am not rolling on the floor over the latest Daniel-ism, I am sending him TO HIS ROOM! for, ummm, interpersonal issues with his siblings. He does not always play well with others. Because, if you haven't guessed it yet, he kind of marches to the beat of his own drummer.

While wearing his boots and a hat.

It's All Fun and Games Till Someone Gets Pooped On

So we're sittin' around on a summer's eve.

We're playin' soccer.

We're pettin' chickens.

We're being adorable.

When alls a sudden.....

There was poop.
Green-brown goo.
There were tears.
There was wailing.

Summer fun over.

Training Pippin

Daniel and I started training his pony Pippin to ride and it's been going supremely well.

Here's Pipp checking out the saddle.

Saddle on the back. No big deal.

Tying up the girth knot. Mine are the only boys I know that already know how to tie a tie without needing a lesson. Girth knot is same thing as a tie knot, so they've btdt..

Pippin seems to be thinking there's an overly large fly on his back.

Believe it or not, this is only the second time Daniel (or anyone for that matter) has been on Pippin's back. Does he get the coveted BPYA (Best Pony of the Year Award) or what?

A little pettin and scritch-scratchin' when all is said and done.

Doesn't look like Pippin is holding any grudges.

Another hard day's work done.....

2 - 12

2:00
Picked up Daniel from school.
Drove over to our other school to pick up Julie and four of her friends for her belated birthday party.
I now have my 11 yr old son, plus five 11 - 13 yr old girls in my car. The girls all immediately begin whipping out cell phones and texting with blinding speed.
All except two: Julie, who asks me for mine so she can follow suit. She doesn't have her own yet but rushes to tell her peers she'll be getting her very own cell phone when 6th grade is over. They kind of sigh in relief. And her friend L, who sits morosely and stares at her thumbs lying lifeless in her lap. She has to wait till her birthday. In August. Collective gasp of horror and looks of pity come from the other girls, who understand that August is a lifetime away.

3:00
Five 11 - 13 year old girls change into bathing suits and jump into the pool.
Two 13 year old girls sit in the bathroom with me as I play nurse, trying to give a lesson in matters feminine so they can join the others in the pool. There are books involved. There are demonstrations and gestures that would make Vanna White proud.
Two 13 yr old girls change into bathing suits and gingerly make their way to the pool to join their friends.

4:30
Seven 11 - 13 year old girls, still wet from swimming, sing happy birthday to Julie. She blows out her candles before we finish singing, then looks up, sheepishly, to explain that she forgot to wait and make a wish. Everyone laughs and finishes the song anyway.

5:30
Seven 11 - 13 yr old girls belt out songs at the top of their lungs as we drive down the road. Windows are open b/c the spilled milk from two days ago still smells like a possum rotting in the Louisiana sun. But nobody seems to care.
I cringe as they scream out pop music lyrics, including but not limited to:
sex in the air, I don't care I like the smell of it
whips and chains excite me
first I'll disrobe you, then I'm gonna probe you
fill me with your love, inject me with your poison
abduct me, I wanna be your victim

I try in vain to educate the girls to the objectification of women but no one's listening so I give up.

6:00
Seven girls carefully select the best seats in the theatre, hold out their paper bags for me to fill with popcorn, and giggle incessantly while they wait for the show to begin. The lights from the screen flicker across their faces in the darkness of the theatre, creating the illusion that they are little girls whose feet don't quite touch the floor. I would never dare share this with them.

8:30
Sit patiently at our booth at Friendly's.
Help girls make their dinner selections.
Try to keep the noise level down.
Play tic-tac-toe and hangman.
Tell them no more inhaling the helium from the balloons.
Tell them no more than two to the bathroom at a time.
Tell them to let go of the drama over the attitude of one of the girl's boyfriends.
Tell them to stop texting each other when they're sitting right next to each other.
Tell them to finish their dinners.
Tell them to say thank you.
Tell them to finish their ice creams.
Tell them to buckle up.
Tell them to open their windows.
Tell them those lyrics are awful because blah blah blah....

11:30
Give reminders about Dorito crumbs in the bedroom.
Give reminders about noise levels after midnight.
Give orders about no sodas.
Give hugs.
Give smiles as the girls tell me this is the best birthday EVER!

12:00
Fall into bed and let exhaustion do its thing.

This sooo made my day....

Daniel's been having a lot of trouble lately.

At home.

At school.

Can't quite seem to figure out why or how to correct things.

So this e-mail from his teacher really brightened my day:

Hi Anne,
I just wanted to let you know about Daniel's very good week. He has been pleasant, cooperative with others, compliant with me and participated in discussions with his completed homework!!!

We have also had a new student (adopted from Russia as a baby) with social anxiety. He seems to have been drawn to Daniel. Daniel has been patient and considerate of this young man's sometimes overbearing need for friendship. I told him how proud I was of him and hope that he keeps it up. I feel it's a great opportunity for Daniel to exercise his giving compassionate side.

Yay Daniel!

Quirky Minds Think Alike

Picked up Daniel's friend today. They hadn't gotten together in a dog's age, and on the drive home, I couldn't help but recall how made for each other these two are.

Some of the words/phrases I heard bouncing around in the back seat....

cryogenics
teleporter
more helium and hydrogen on Venus
DNA extraction
clone the pilot
dinosaurs in acid
I'll choke you
don't break my neck
sanitary
rock vs stapler?
the smoothest pencil in the world

Now, I'll admit the context and significance of most of these word bytes were lost on me.
I'm assuming it all made sense to them.

Future careers? The possibilities are endless. Some that jump to mind are:
video game designers (b/c we soooo need more video games in our world)
writers
astrophysicists
sanitation engineers
astronauts
pencil manufacturers
producers of fights pitting inanimate object agains each other

Taking bets.

Almost forgot to add Daniel's first day of school. Hey, he started school a couple days after the others, so don't look at me that way!

Have your best year yet, Daniel!

Must be doin' somethin' right......

Had a full docket this afternoon. Had to run out for appointments and carpools for about 4 hours, but lucky for me I've got great kids. Julie cooked and served dinner for the rest of the kids. Patrick unloaded the dishwasher and Daniel emptied the kitchen trash and took it downstairs to the garage. All without adult supervision.

If I'm not careful I'm going to be out of a job soon....

A Strange Night ....

Last night our family went to the rescheduled Chinese New Year's celebration over at the University of DE. Now, I'm all for exposing my kids to culture, but I'll admit the reason for this venture was because Daniel's Kung Fu school would be participating, and Daniel would be on stage with the group showing off their prowess with their "Arrowhand Set". The festivities were kicked off with a fantastic Lion Dance (like a Chinese Dragon), complete with big drums and all, performed by some of the higher-ups at Daniel's school.
After that, things slowed to a droning halt when the MCs went through a long list of who-all they wanted to thank and recognize for the evening's events. Including Ping and his twin brother Ming. They ended by saying, "Unfortunately, we cannot thank everyone individually ..."
Honestly, I think we were the only ones there not thanked.

They went on to showcase some dancers and musical performers that were at times incredible, at times .... really strange. Including an older woman who seemed like a VIP and was simply God-awful first on the violin and then with her torturing performance on the mandolin when she played Turkey in the Straw. You know, the culturally relevant number Turkey in the Straw.

One of the funniest parts of the evening was when the Mayor of Newark took the stage to make some remarks. Dressed like an 80s preppy with a navy blazer and whales on his pants and looking very distinguished with his silver locks, he opened his mouth to reveal his terribly strong Philly accent, hon. He had a gift for the president of the sponsoring society and he pulled it out of a run-down looking red shopping bag. He went on to say that he was going to bring a white bag but his wife told him he'd better be politically correct and bring the red bag. He then thanked the Chinese people for naming their New Year after his cat, Tiger. He finally commented on just how nice the Chinese students were and how glad he was to have them in hs community. Said he sees them around town, "Riding their bicycles, walking ... just really ... nice".

As probably the only white people in the audience, we did feel a bit left out of the loop when the MCs would banter with each other in Chinese and the audience would just laugh and laugh.

But it was .... interesting. And fun. And we shared a lot of laughs on the car ride out to get Dairy Queen afterwards.

To Daniel: great job on yours and your school's performance last night.
To the Chinese people: a happy and prosperous year of the tiger.
To my family: thanks for allowing me to expose you to a little culture without threatening mutiny.
