Fireworks.
Hey, friends, how was your holiday?
We had a wonderful 4th of July.
We had a terrible 4th of July.
Lots of fireworks, of both the driveway pyrotechnic variety and the explosive mentally unstable teenager variety.
We had corn on the cob, burgers and dogs on the grill, baked beans, watermelon, fresh salad, bomb pops.
We had cops in the driveway, cops hightailin' it down the street in pursuit, handcuffs, neighbors staring. Questions, decisions, but no answers.
We had colorful fireworks against a dark sky, we had giggling teenagers, we had 4 girls passed out in a tent.
We had colorful police lights against a twilight sky, we had an hysterical teenager, we had an exhausted teen passed out on my bed.
4th of Julys can be quite exhausting.....

Easter Grass
Not so many years back, our "Easter Eve", if you will, was saturated in tradition. We dyed dozens of eggs, we decorated Easter baskets, we held fantastic Easter egg hunts complete with a gaggle of children scurrying through spring grass searching high and low for what seemed like hundreds of candy-filled eggs, plus the one prized Golden Egg. Finding it was momentous enough to want to add that to a future resume.

But sigh. Now all our kids are teenagers. Teenagers are poopy when it comes to childhood traditions.
Does anyone want to dye eggs? Nahhh....
Time to get your Easter baskets down from the attic. Is anyone going to decorate theirs? Nahhhh....
And I have to admit, their lackadaisical attitude is contagious.
Did I boil the eggs and set up the cups and Paas? Nahhhh....
Did I set all the basket trimmings and supplies out for them? Nahhh....
About the only thing I insisted on was that they put SOMEthing out on the table. If it wasn't their basket, so be it, but they had to put something out. A shoebox, anything. If they didn't, I threatened to just put a 5 pound bag of Domino's sugar on the table with 6 spoons and bypass the Easter candy altogether.
And some of them kind of met my challenge. This year a plastic cake saver graces our table, as does a green storage bin from the pantry (I'm afraid to venture into the pantry for fear of finding a bin's worth of Ramen packs or popcorn bags dumped all over the shelf and/or floor).
No one put any Easter grass into their "baskets". And truth be told I really didn't care. I started pulling things out of the Walmart bags I had bought only just yesterday and dumping them unceremoniously into the baskets.
No! I couldn't do it. I stopped mid-Peter Rabbit on the 5th basket and took everything out. I rooted through the Easter bin on the floor and found a large plastic bag filled with an assortment of grass from Easters past. Green, blue, pink, yellow, sparkly, papery, plasticy, iridescent. All tangled together in a flamboyant rat's nest. I started tearing handfuls of the stuff and shoving it into the baskets, then giving it a little fluffing. When I was done there were bits of grass everywhere, including in my hair and down my pajama shirt.
I stood back and surveyed my handiwork..
There now, I thought. That looks like Easter.
And with a smile on my face I went back to work filling the baskets with chocolates and jelly beans, and all was right with my world.
Although it was made just a bit righter when I popped an M&M in my mouth.
Happy Easter, everyone!!!

Mirth Monday
A little Easter funny. Something I posted several years ago on my old blog....
So kids, let Mommy explain to you all about Easter. Jesus died on the cross for your sins.
Well, no, I know you weren't around back then, not your sins specifically. But He just did.
Then He rose from the dead.
No, not like a zombie.
He just did.
We decorate Easter baskets and dye eggs real pretty to symbolize springtime and new life.
Yes, I know Jesus was born on Christmas, but we celebrate new life at Easter. After He died.
We just do.
We eat chocolate eggs because .....
Well I don't know why exactly, but aren't they yummy? Don't touch that, you've got chocolate all over your hands.
OK, now let's all go outside and find the candy-filled Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny hid in the yard. Hmmmm? He's a giant bunny that brings candy to good boys and girls. No, honey, don't look afraid, he's a good giant bunny. No, he didn't rise from the dead. No, he's not related to Jesus.
Here, have some more chocolate and let Mommy go lie down for a little while.

Chicken-Scratch-Saturday: Family Tree Skirt
This is another Christmas idea I got years ago, and again I quote Family Fun as my maybe source.
It is our tree skirt for our Christmas tree.
I don't have the instructions for it, but it was pretty easy no-sew project. You just cut out a tree skirt shape out of any heavy fabric you like (I used a green velvety-type). It's basically a great big donut with a slit cut from edge to center. If you need to, just use your existing skirt as a pattern.
Then you turn the edges under and glue them with some tacky glue or hot glue. Glue on some rick-rack for trim, if you'd like.
Then pick some fabric paint that will contrast nicely with the material you used. Pour some onto a paper plate and coat each family members hands, one set at a time, and help them press their hands onto the fabric in pairs around the edges. You can go back later and touch up empty spots with a paintbrush if needed.
Have each person in the family write their name on a piece of tracing paper. Cut out each name so it's a workable, stand-alone square piece of paper. Then on the back of each name, squeeze some good old-fashioned Elmer's glue on the letters, tracing each letter just as the child wrote it. Press this onto the tree skirt just above or just beneath their handprints, pull up the paper, and sprinkle with glitter so you've covered all the glue-letters. Repeat with each person's name.
Finally, write out the year on the skirt with the glue, and sprinkle glitter over that, as well.
Pretty simple, and yet this is maybe the one thing I'd run back into the house for if my house was burning down.
Here is a picture of ours. Pay no attention to the dog and cat hair.

(Names blacked out)
Ours has the year 2001, because that was the year I made it, but then when Bella joined our family in 2003, I added that year. James and Julie's handprints were added six years later, but I still have to go back and write in their names and the year.
I'll get to it.
No really, I will.
Let me know if any of you end up making this, and show me a picture!

Chicken-Scratch-Saturday: Advent Stockings
A number of years ago I came across an idea somewhere (Family Fun, maybe?) of a fun way to count down the days till Christmas.
We had done the advent chains, where you start with 24 paper chains and you rip one off each day so the kids (the little ones, especially) can see how many days are left till the big day. Some people write a bible verse on each chain, or an idea of an activity to do, some just leave them blank.
We also do advent calendars, as this is something I remember from my childhood. Somehow, my kids seem to get just as much thrill out of something as simple as looking for the daily number and opening the flap as I did when I was little.
But my favorite Christmas countdown, and it seems to be my kids' favorite as well, is our advent stockings.

I'm still planning on throwing a length of Christmas greenery along the hooks to dress it up a bit, but you get the idea.
Pretty simple to do, and the kids get soooo excited to find out what's in each stocking.
I just went out and bought 12 pairs of red and white socks from Wal-Mart, but you could do this for free just by using socks from your unmatched socks basket.
What? Doesn't everybody have a basket full of scores of unmatched socks???
Find some wallspace where you can hang this. I happen to have a long mirror with hooks on it that I use, but you can get some of those 3M hooks that come off the wall when you're done. Those things are all kinds of awesome.
Run a string through the holes of 24 clothespins, and mark the clothespins from 24 down to 1, with 24 to the left and 1 all the way at the end on the right.

Then have some fun figuring out what to fill the stockings with. If you haven't figured it out yet, this works just like an old-fashioned advent calendar: on Dec 1st, your kids get to see what's in the stocking hung by the "24" clothespin. Dec 2nd they open the "23" stocking and so on down the line till they've opened the "1" stocking on Christmas Eve.
The beauty of this is that you can go really cheap or really elaborate, whatever floats your boat (and your budget).
A few ideas along the range of free to pricey:
*print out some Christmas activity pages, such as word-searches, crosswords, coloring pages,
*cut out strips of red and green construction paper and put those in the stocking for the kids to make a Christmas chain,
*cut out a little Christmas tree from green paper and write "Today we find (or decorate) our Christmas tree!",
*put a Christmas cookie cutter in the stocking to let them know today's the day they'll get to help make Christmas cookies,
*put a little baggie of birdseed in the stocking with a note that instructs them how to make peanut-butter-and-birdseed-pinecone-feeders for the birds,
*candy canes,
*Christmas pencils,
*gum,
*Christmassy hair accessories,
*jingle bells and some ribbon for the kids to make necklaces with,
*surprise them with breakfast out on the way to school one day (perhaps you could write it out on a star cut-out),
*cute Christmas socks.
You're only limited by your imagination.
Each day, another sock comes down, so they'll have the visual before them of how many days remain till Christmas.
If you can't trust the kids to not peek (and really, if you can, I don't like you very much), then just fill one at a time before you go on to bed each night.
The kids have been asking me for weeks when we can start the advent stockings.
Maybe I'll need to make advent stockings leading up to the advent stockings.

Merry Easter!
A couple weeks before Easter, I started saving aside any green, white, and light brown eggs my chickadees gave me for dying.
We ended up with about 3 dozen.

We berled 'em up.

And we dyed 'em.

Well. Mostly my adorable nephew dyed them and we all stood around like papparazzi taking about 20,000 pictures of him.
Can you blame us?
Really, can you?

I wasn't sure how the light brown ones would take the dye, so we put two dye tabs in each cup.

I think they came out great.

Happy Easter!

Can you blame us?
Really, can you?
I wasn't sure how the light brown ones would take the dye, so we put two dye tabs in each cup.
I think they came out great.
Happy Easter!

Independence Day
Happy 4th....

Last year we tie dyed.

The year before that, James and Julie's first 4th with us, we took some cheesy pictures in matching t-shirts.
We did some driveway fireworks.
We got a little scared.
We celebrated freedom.
This year? I don't really have any plans yet.
Some cook out.
Some watermelon.
Some time in the pool.
S'mores?
Light up the leftover fireworks from last year.
Ooh.
Aah.
Enjoy our freedoms.
Be thankful we live in the best country on earth.
Be hopeful we can do better.
Praise God for the six young blessings in my life.
Thank Him for letting them be here with us.
Rejoice that they will grow up here.
In our family.
In America.
Happy Independence Day everyone......

(Summer) Break of Insanity
Just 3 1/2 school days remain.
Then they will be ....
released.
[Twitch]
I used to love summer break.
And I'm not just talkin' about my own distant childhood. I mean I truly and thoroughly enjoyed when my kids were home the entirety of the summer.
The last few years I've been clinging to my old phrases like a child clutching a security blanket.
I could hear the words coming out of my mouth:
"I love summers" I'd say.
"No alarm clocks. No after school activities. No homework, no projects to oversee. No papers to sign, no field trips to chaperone. Just endless days stretching together. Warm sun, the pool, the beach, fireflies, watermelon...."
All spoken while wearing the grin of a simpleton.
But nowadays
[twitch]
when I begin to think of my kids being home
all day
every day
[tremble]
my teeth begin to rattle ever so slightly, and a thin stream of drool leaks from the corner of my mouth.

Oh there are plenty of good times. Many a Norman Rockwell-worthy picture of my kids riding bikes, drawing chalk pictures on the driveway, playing basketball, fishing in our pond, swimming in the pool, laughing with friends. Eating corn on the cob, watermelon. Picking cherries from our trees then gobbling them down and spittin' the pits.
But then there are...
the dark times.
The times they bicker. They whine. They yell and fight and glare. They make faces, argue about whose turn it is to do what, whose turn it is to sit where, who ate their last water ice, whose drank the last of the iced tea and didn't make more.
She's wearing my shirt, he pushed me, she smells bad, are you ever planning to wash your hair, it's my turn to ride shotgun/to pick the radio station/to have a friend come with us to the movies. He broke my goggles, he rode my bike without asking, she's sitting in my spot, she had a friend over last time, it's my turn, it's mine it's mine it's mine.
[cower in corner and suck thumb while eyes glaze over]

And I know nothing really works. Suzy Sunshine Mom makes an appearance for a while with grand ideas about arts and crafts, daytrips and pool games.
But then she blows it with her sing-songy motivational team-building speeches for a cooperative work-together attitude for all the pool-cleaning, weed-pulling, house-cleaning, grass-mowing things on the to-do list.

Then the whining kicks in and Nurse Ratchet Mom moves in. She tries to control the situation with her steel glint, her even tone, her drama-free temperament that is never shaken.

But the kids beat her the hell out of our house and on her heels storms in Roseanne Barr, screaming at the kids, commanding them, out-whining them.
I like Roseanne.
Forget Nanny 9-1-1, who's got a direct line to Roseanne? Mary, my celebrity sister? Do any of your people know any of her people? I would even be tempted to trade in my invitation to see Mr. Clooney at the premier if I could get Roseanne to move in with us for a couple weeks to whip my little b@#*&^ into shape.
Then they will be ....
released.
