Filling in the Gaps: Saying Goodbye to My Mother

So I used to write in this blog pretty prolifically.  But when things went from chaotic/messy/stressful/fun to just plain old stressful, the blogging dropped by the wayside as I processed all my life changes.

Looking back, I see the drop-off started in 2016, where I published five posts, then in 2017 there was only one.  In 2018 I wrote no posts at all, and a grand total of two in 2019.  I'd like to think I'm getting back into the groove this year.  I only started up again last month, but already have five posts to my credit!

In a post I wrote in November 2019, I said I would like to go back to fill in the gaps.  I am not going to pretend to attack this in any kid of systematic fashion.  Instead, I'll just put things up as they come to me and as I have time.

Like I said, the drop-off began in 2016, and one of the biggest things that happened in my life that year was the death of my mother.  I had written up a post after her passing, but never published it.  I will do that now, and let that serve as my jumping-off point for filling in the gaps between then and now.

Kid, Hon, Bird,
Mrs. Birdsong, Mother Bridsnog
Sugar Britches.
Kathy, Katharine, Kath,
Miss Kimball,
Ma, Mom, Mommy, Grammy,
and (long story) “Susan.”

Katharine Evans Kimball Birdsong went by many names, but the one name that best captures her spirit is…

POET.

She was a gentle soul with a poet’s heart, and on June 2nd, 2016, Katharine Birdsong took her last breath at the age of 72. When my mom learned of her terminal condition, she felt like she was just going on a long trip- quite literally at first.  Shortly after her prognosis of having three to five months to live, she had the impulse to start packing and began looking for her favorite well-worn Agatha Christie novel , and her even more worn pair of slippers, only to realize with a disappointed laugh that it was true what they say—“You can’t take it with you.”

She was more of a giver than a taker anyway.  One of the greatest things she gave us was a colorful childhood.
Words like “colorful,” “unconventional,” “eccentric”… these are polite substitutions for words less kind -- words that sometimes come with unwarranted shame. They are a gentlemen’s code used to describe people whose brilliance, creativity and compassion come with some heavy crosses to bear.  And though our mother’s “peace of mind” was often tested by personal demons, great tragedies and deep loss, she always strove to find some kernel of beauty and light amidst the struggle.

It’s hard to explain our unconventional household, but if you’ve ever come home from school and found a wounded (but very much alive) goose staring back at you from the only bathtub in the house, or a large (but very much dead) deer in the back seat of your mom’s broken down Oldsmobile, you'll have an idea of the colorful childhood our mom painted on a Jersey Shore canvas.

Her unorthodox life was matched by her eclectic resume, with jobs including, but not limited to:

  • waitress
  • journalist
  • clammer
  • convent cook
  • monastery maid
These jobs may been humble, but they were not without their perks.  While working as a live-in cook and housekeeper for a Catholic bishop (in a beautiful oceanfront home) she'd occasionally “borrow” his house when he was off doing bishop-y things.  Her daughter Mary’s eighth birthday party was held in his living room.  It beat the one bedroom efficiency apartment over his garage where she and her four children actually lived.

Whether in a professional capacity or for her family, the woman could cook.  She nurtured the food she was cooking just as she nurtured the folks fed by it, working a pot of soup like a sculpture.  Many sat at her table: friends, neighbors, folks down on their luck or without family.  Even from time to time the creepy neighbor who claimed to be an orthodox Ukrainian priest (“He wasn’t no priest!”). She was also an expert at stretching a few meager ingredients. The mouths she could feed with a can of tuna and a loaf of generic white bread would put Jesus’ loaves and fishes to shame.

Born in northern NJ in 1944, Katharine wouldn’t remain a Yankee for long.  Her parents relocated to the Deep South (where they’d both grown up) to raise their children in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Married at seventeen, our mother had her first child at eighteen after having to relocate quite unexpectedly with her new husband to Germany, where they lived an almost medieval lifestyle complete with chamber pots and cauldrons of boiled water for bathing.
After returning to the states and her Louisiana life, she made several moves through a handful of states and eventually wound up in a South Jersey Shangri-La called Long Beach Island.  Choosing a remote island for her home, where she knew not a blessed soul had its own unique challenges, but she was nothing if not resourceful.

Case in point: Her first day on the island she’d tucked her three small children into bed with kisses on their cheeks and thumb-swiped crosses on their foreheads, then returned to unpacking.  Much time and many boxes later, she still could not find the alarm clock. Desperate to make sure they’d all wake up in time for school, she called the police, and in her soft whisper of a southern voice, she asked the amused cop on the other end of the line for a wake-up call.  He was putty in her hands, and her children all got to school on time the next morning.
How a woman as beautiful as she could be so self-conscious of her looks is hard to fathom, yet she never saw the beauty that was so apparent to others. Despite her poor opinion of her looks, she stopped many a heart and turned many a head.  In fact, one Halloween while taking her children trick-or-treating, she was hit on by a bold 13 year old who mistook the dark-haired beauty for a gypsy. “Son,” she said, “I’m somebody’s Mama.”
Her Mama’s depression-era mentality certainly rubbed off on her, and she was simply unable to throw things out.  Cupboards and counter tops overflowed with cookie tins, plastic bottles, boxes and bags of all shapes and sizes.  Her refrigerator was crammed tight with little baggies containing half pieces of toast or a few crumbles of bacon, each labelled meticulously with a black marker on a piece of masking tape. Although she would use paper plates, she refused to throw them out until they were threadbare, wiping them off over and over because they were still “perfectly good.” Some say "Hoarder," others say "Green.” Tomato, tuhmahto.
Regardless, though she had to feed four children from a poverty-level pantry, she knew all there was to know about British Royal Family lineage, Shakespearean sonnets, biblical archaeology, and the latest installment of Masterpiece Theatre.  She was quite the anglophile.  Yorkshire Pudding was a regular item on the menu, but her children would eat it off of rickety TV trays while sitting on a three-legged curb-rescue sofa watching Laverne and Shirley.

Cooking and kindness will likely be what folks remember most about Katharine. A friend recently said of her, “She was always so kind to me. Every time she saw me she would compliment me, tell me I was a good father, and that God had a special place for me.”  That was just what she did.

She lost her only son Donald (her first-born child) to brain cancer when he was just 33 years old. And when his illness went from bad to worse she cared for him when he could no longer care for himself.  She was with him through all of it.

With her intelligence and her compassion, she could have excelled in any field, but due to so many struggles (both internal and external) she never found “success” in the traditional sense of the word.  She was, however, wildly successful in making those around her feel loved and cherished, and as unique as their fingerprints. There were many times she could not access her heart of gold, her generous and kind nature.  But when she could, you felt flooded by the light of the angels, and buoyed by the voice of a poet:

FINGERPRINTS
by Katharine Birdsong

To all who’ve touched my life, my soul,
Who’ve broken me or made me whole,
Or who’ve revealed a glimpse of you,
Stripped by all except what’s True—

You’ve left your mark no other’ll see,
Indelible, a part of me;
An imprint only you could make,
And from me none’ll ever take.

Light and dark, these works of Art—
Fingerprints upon my heart----
For good or not, I cannot tell,

But I’ve left my own as well.

I Go Crazy (for Austin Mahone)

My sister, the ultra talented Mary Birdsong, along with her equally talented friend Mike Ruekberg, recently paired up on a very special project.
They took a song, written by Angel-on-Earth Natasha, and put it to music, and created an amazing video montage.  It is Natasha's homage to her favorite performer, Austin Mahone.
Labor of love?  It doesn't get much better than this.

Percy Jackson

Everyone change your plans for tonight.

You need to get yourselves to the movies.

Why, you ask???

To see Percy Jackson, Sea of Monsters, of course.

Why, you ask again?

To see my sister Mary Birdsong!

Mary plays a creepy-scary-ghoulish-cab driver from hell.

You can read what she has to say about the experience by going to her blog Big Mama's Honeymoon Underpants.

She has a video clip of her scene on there, too. You will NOT believe how six hours of make-up and prosthetics can transform my Bee-U-ti-ful little sister into something so ghastly.
(Mary is the one behind the wheel)

Dear Mr. Clooney,

Dear Mr. Clooney,

It has come to my attention that you and Miss Stacy Keibler have parted ways.
Such sad news.

But time heals all wounds, as they say. Take a little down time in your villa and be sure to engage in some fun activities to get your mind off your heartbreak.

Then, when you're ready (and only when you're truly ready), jump back into the dating game.

Although I am protective of my little sister Mary Birdsong, I do approve of you as a would-be suitor, so feel free to call on her.

Since you worked with her on The Descendants, I'm sure you already have her contact information, but if you've lost it, please feel free to email me and I'll get that to you (farmbeachgal@yahoo.com).

Might I remind you that you have several things in common? You've both lived in Kentucky, you're both actors who have a great sense of humor. You can both do impressions. You're both Democrats, you're Irish/German/English, Catholic, you were born in the same decade, the list goes on. I mean honestly, you were made for each other.

Plus she's cute as a button, see?

and you're just handsome as all get out and I have a huge crush on you myself but my husband won't give me a celebrity pass.

And just think, if you went out with my sister, and things ended in matrimony, you would get me as your sister-in-law, and my six kids would be your ready-made nieces and nephews. Fun, right?

You could come visit us on the farm sometimes. You could go fishing in our pond. Only watch where you step because you know we never rebuilt that spillway very well and we wouldn't want you twisting an ankle where it's all eroded.

You could gather eggs in the barn, wouldn't that be quaint? Just keep your eye open for rats. And manure. You probably wear expensive shoes, so be careful, I wouldn't want you to ruin them.

Maybe you would be better off swimming in our pool. It's one of them fancy in-ground ones. A "see-ment pond", as Ellie May used to say. Just give us a little warning so I can get the kids to clean it. It's been known to get murky if we don't stay on top of it. And it sometimes has frogs in it, so we'll pick them out ahead of time if you just give us a little notice.

It'll be just like spending down time in your villa.  Except we don't have any servants or anything and there's a lot of screaming and yelling and crying all the time and there's dog hair in every corner and sometimes really gross stuff gets tracked in the house on peoples' boots and there's a lot of dogs barking and tripping you up and there are a few temper holes in the walls and like I said we have frogs in our pool and you've probably never been swimming in a pool that had frogs in it.

But other than that, you won't know the difference.

So yeah....

Mary Birdsong.  She's for you.

Most sincerely,
Your future sister-in-law,

Anne

Sister Treat 14

My sisters Mary and Veronica and I go on a sister's retreat every year. It's the brilliant brain child of Mary, and we've been doing it 14 years now, ever since my baby Daniel was about a year old.

When my kids were little, they always called it our "sister treat", so of course that's been it's official name for years.

I just came back from Sister Treat 14, and I shall go into a year long period of mourning till we can do this again next year.

A few times we've pulled out all the stops, whatever that means, and done things in grand style. Last year for instance, we flew to Mexico and stayed at a lovely resort for a few days. Once we went to Puerto Rico, and once to LA. Usually, however, we stay pretty local. Someplace we can get to within a few hours drive, and a few times we stayed right at Mary's place in Manhattan.

This was one such time.

We decided we would make this a Jerry Seinfeld treat. Much as Jerry Seinfeld was a show about nothing, this was to be our treat about nothing. We went into it without an itinerary and just flew by the seat of our pants all weekend.

And it was lovely.

On our second Treat, we had a waitress that could double for Julia Child in appearance and voice that would ask us, "Would the ladies care for some winnnnne?"

This year we had our first dinner at the Italian restaurant downstairs from Mary's apartment. The food was gourmet and delicious and carried us through several hours of talking and reminiscing and home-grown therapy.

Next day we had the most amazing brunch at a place we just happened to be passing by near Times Square. I had French Toast that was sitting in some kind of maple-infused cream and it had caramelized apples and I thought I was in heaven. Weight Watchers can just back off for a couple days. We got massages at a little spa that we almost passed right by and it was serene and cheap and utterly transforming. We laughed ourselves silly at "Avenue Q" off Broadway and finished off the night with another round of therapy, talking till 2 or 3 in the morning.

On Sunday we had high tea, did some upper East side shopping, got mani-pedis, and took in a movie with lots of buttered popcorn and cold drinks (stand down, WW, I'll be back soon, I promise).

Monday brought a few more hours of shopping and little surprises and more talking and laughing.

I didn't want to leave!!!

But all good things must come to an end, I suppose.

At least we have next year to look forward to.

And the year after that,

and the year after that,

and the year after that.....

Wordless Wednesday: MayHeeCo

SISTER'S RETREAT IN MEXICO!!!!

Left for my sister's last Friday, and the three of us flew out on Saturday.

Arrived home last night.
Tired, but destressed.
A little color, but not sunburned.

Did I accomplish what I set out to do?

Laughing, check.
Crying, check.
Finding myself, check.
Lying on a beach chair, check.
Swimming in the Carribean, check.
Eating food cooked and served to me by others, check.
Doing no household chores whatsoever, check.
Being a completely silly 12 year old, check.

Here are a few pictures...

If we wished not to be molested, we had only to hang a note on our door....

Slightly Wordy Wordless Wednesday

This little girl

had a birthday last week.

This pretty lady

is Mary Birdsong.
Her aunt.
My sister.

She has all kinds of impressive, fancy Hollywood connections.

In fact, she was in the middle of working with this impressive, fancy Hollywood connection last Saturday

One Ms. Dot Jones.

Of Glee fame.

And Mary

got to talking to Dot

about Bella.

And how it was her birthday and all.

And Dot said,

Let's call her.
Let's call her right now.

And they did.

And Bella and her two sisters and four friends,
all between the ages of 13 and 15,
got to talk squeal and scream and giggle on speaker phone to the impressive and fancy Dot Jones, of Glee fame.

And even though close family and friends can often have trouble understanding Bella when face to face,

Ms. Jones, in her infinite patience and kindness, found a way to comprehend everything Bella said to her, from 3,000 miles away, on speaker phone, while seven giggly girls in an SUV carried on.

And Bella was the hero of the day.

In my book? So was Dot Jones.

And Mary Birdsong.

Outa Town, Outa Touch

As my GPS would say, I have arrived at my destination.

We're on vacation in New Hampshire, arrived last night. And it is a lovely condo in a lovely mountain lake resort, and we are here with our lovely friends.

Fresh mountain air; clear, cool creek babbling just outside our window; plenty of things for the kids, the family, to do; good friends, wine....

Only two problems...

1) No A/C. It should be cool for sleeping, but it's kinda hot and sticky for our spoiled family (myself included).

2) No internet at the unit we're staying at. There's internet at the rec center, but that means we'll have to leave the creature comforts of our home away from home every time we want to log in. Boo. I may just go into withdrawal. Wah.

I am strong. I will survive this.

Anyway, if I'm off my bloggy game over the next week, there is a good reason.

Now. As to us "going Amish" like I wrote a couple days ago. In case you haven't already figured it out from yesterday's post, my sister Mary Birdsong is involved in a show (Spirit Seeker) that is being filmed at my house.

Six of the cast and crew arrived Tues night, another the next day, and several more the afternoon we left for New Hampshire.

Can you say full house?

On Wednesday, they shot the scenes my kids were involved in, where they play spooky Amish kids. Well, the character that plays my sister's teenaged son believes them to be spooky, anyway. I think the DP and the director/writer/producer did a heck of a job of getting them to look the part, don't you?

So like I said, now we're away, and they have the house to themselves (including Romy Rosemont sleeping in my bed), so I can stop stressing about whether there's coffee in the pot and clean sheets on the bed for a few days.

Well. At least not at our house in PA. I guess I still have all that to think about here in NH. But only for the 8 of us, not for 20+.

Yay!

Spirit Seeker

Oh fun fun fun.

My sister, Mary Birdsong, is involved in an indie film project called The Spirit Seeker.

In this comedy, she plays reality TV's Samantha Bell, not a ghost hunter, but a ghost "healer."

In the pilot episode, to be filmed in August, she travels to a charming bed and breakfast in PA Dutch country to investigate a haunting.

The location of this bed and breakfast?

That would be my house.

Besides my sister, Stephen Root and Romy Rosemont will also be starring in this blockbuster.

Mary's compatriot Matt Scott came out to my house this past week to do some scouting, take a bunch of pictures, get the lay of the land.... and to meet my kids, who will have cameo roles in the film.

Exciting?
Uh, yeah.

We're excited.

Stay tuned for more updates.....

Help a Girl Out!

This is from my sister, Mary Birdsong. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi-
This is really important to me. I am asking for your help ASAP. Pretend I'm Jimmy Stewart
and this is IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and Uncle George just screwed up and now the whole
town has to help George Bailey.

Please please please go to the following website and post a comment if you want
to help me start a grass roots campaign to encourage NBC to pick up the tv pilot
I just shot. It's called "Downwardly Mobile," and I can honestly say that I think it is really great.
It stars Roseanne Barr and John Goodman, and me, and a bunch of other
really funny, talented people. And NBC is looking like they are souring on the
idea of picking it up. Who the heck knows why, because it tested through the roof.
It's MADDENING! This could be life-changing if it does get a pick-up, so PLEASE PLEASE
PLEASE spread the word-- tell all your friends to go to the link below, and comment.
AND IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN BLOG, ETC-- PLEASE! GO FOR IT. POST ABOUT THE SHOW
AND HOW EXCITED YOU ARE FOR IT TO COME OUT.

NO NEED TO MENTION ME BY NAME!

Just get the word out that NBC should pick up this incredible show!

I LOVE YOU GUYS, AND THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME/US!!!

A Star is Born

My daughter Rosie is in her school play. They're doing Zombie Prom. I saw it last night and it was fabulous! Great music, funny, clever; just all-in-all a rolicking good time.

Her two aunts came out to see it, too, so you could say there was Hollywood representation (from her Aunt Mary).

Great job, kids.
I see BIG things in store for you all, big things!

There's Just No Stoppin' This Girl.

My sister Mary Birdsong has been at it again.

As you know, she was recently seen on the big screen in The Descendants.

Tues night she was on Raising Hope.

But she's also going to be in the upcoming movie (still in production) Percy Jackson 2

AND,

we just found out she got cast in a new sitcom produced by Roseann Barr! It's called Downwardly Mobile and they'll start shooting next month.

Please form an orderly line for autographs.

Yay Mary! Represent!

O.M.G!

I'd been saying since I saw the movie last October that there was a chance that my sister Mary Birdsong's scene with George Clooney in The Descendants would be played at the Oscars when they played the clip for his Best Actor nomination.

And they DID!!!!

I LOVE YOU MARY!!!!!!

Oscars

So tonight's The Big Night. The Oscars.

As you may or may not have heard
oh I'm sorry, have I already mentioned that?(cough)
my sister, actress Mary Birdsong,

was in the movie The Descendants, with George MF Clooney.

And as it turns out, The Descendants will be well represented at tonight's Academy Awards. It's up for:
Best Picture
Best Actor - George Clooney
Best Director - Alexander Payne.

Now, Mr. Payne seemed like a very nice man

WHEN I MET HIM
name drop-name drop-name-drop

and you all know my feelings for Georgie
swoon-drool-hot flash

and I sincerely hope they both win their categories.

But what I want most of all is for The Descendants to win Best Picture.

Because THEN, Mary can have bragging rights on her resume and , oh well pretty much everything the rest of her LIFE, that she was in an Academy Award-winning movie.

And that would be pretty awesome.

Cheer for Mary! Vote for her sister (that would be me)....
