Class Reunion

I’m celebrating something today.

A reunion.

And while my high school reunion IS fast approaching, that’s not the one I’m referring to.

I’m talking about the April 2012 MNINB Platform Challenge Reunion.

I know, it’s a mouthful. I’ll break it down…

April 2012: A year ago.

MNINB: My Name is Not Bob. The name of the blog of Robert Lee Brewer (whose name is not Bob). That’s Robert Lee Brewer of Writer’s Digest fame, for any non-writerly folk out there. He’s a writerly-type extraordinaire, and he had the grand idea to put his knowledge out there for folks like me.

Platform: This is what you want if you’re a writer that hopes to be published. Why? I don’t know, but all the agents whine platform, platform, platform All. The. Time. Apparently you need it, and size matters. As in, they want to see a lot of followers and lots of traffic and a large presence in all the sundry social media venues.

Challenge: Because I’m challenged.

Reunion: The folks who went through the challenge formed a bit of a band. A family. And it’s extremely cool. At first, we were calling ourselves the Not Bobbers, but now we’re all grown up and we go by Wordsmith Studio. Isn’t that the bomb? We have our own blog and a badge and everything.

See?

Anyway, we realized that we had all learned so much during the platform challenge and then in the ensuing year, and we said, “Wordsmithers? We should have a reunion of sorts so we can all reflect on how we’ve grown and what we’ve learned.”

Only it was going to be way better than a real reunion because nobody would be talking about how much weight the prom queen had gained or how pot-bellied and balding the varsity quarterback had gotten or how Mr. Most Likely to Succeed was still living with his mother 30 years later.

Each of us that wanted to attend the reunion had only to sign up for a date in April and write up a piece about all that reflection and growth.

And so this is mine.

From the challenge, I learned that it’s not enough to say “If I build it, they will come.” Not in this digital age, anyway. You have to build it, and commit to adding to it, and sharing it, and engaging with others till you become that cool party house that everyone wanted to hang out at. You know, the one with the laid back parents and plenty of chips.

And I’ve learned that a lot of this process is fun, but some of it is tedious and downright hard. With this reunion, it’s time to look back at what I was taught, and figure out what I learned and what I still use. Just like those school subjects so many years ago.

For example, Twitter and Google+ and Linked In and SEO? That was math for me. I learned it, but it’s not easy for me and I don’t enjoy it. I know how to use the basics enough to get by, but you’ll never catch me dabbling in it just for fun.

Facebook and Blog Hops and Guest Posting and editorial calendars? That’s my English. A bit dry and dreary at times, but it comes easy and I kind of enjoy it.

Pinterest? Art class! It’s fun and it’s easy and I love it.

Creating blog posts and reading comments and checking my stats? Those are the after school activities that I do because I choose to do them, not because the state mandates that I take the class.

Of course, there are a few areas I need improvement in, and I need to work on those skills. Kind of like taking an adult education class at the local community college. For example, I suck at engagement, so I really need to beef up my skills there. It’s partly a time issue, but I know I can’t blame it entirely on that. And I need to find a way to allow readers to follow me by email. I tried to put an email-following widget in my sidebar once, but I failed. I need to retake that class. Summer school?

Clearly, I learned plenty during the challenge, even if it wasn’t all fun. But where did it get me? Am I more successful now as a writer than I was in March 2012? I’d say yes, I am. When I look back at where I was in terms of platform before the challenge compared to now, I can see an enormous change. My blog followers have grown from numbering in the teens to over 500. My monthly page views have grown from about 4,000 to five times that amount. I have a healthy following on Twitter and Pinterest, and a Facebook fan page that’s none too shabby. Besides the increase in traffic and followers, my “searchability” has improved tremendously, I’ve received a few awards, and I’ve had essays published in magazines as well as in several books. I’ve been interviewed a number of times, and I receive queries for guest post submissions and advertisers on a daily basis. So yeah. HUGE difference for me.

Besides reflecting back at what you’ve learned and how far you’ve come when you’re at a reunion, you also apply that to your classmates. Where are they now? So I ask, what of my fellow “students” from this graduating class? Well, I am nothing short of amazed. When I think of their collective creative genius, their fortitude, and their leadership skills, I am blown away. The Wordsmithers is an organized and efficient group, with a board of directors, committee members, and an ambitious yet grounded vision. They are intelligent, supportive, inquisitive, and talented, and I am humbled and honored to be a part of this incredible group. What’s that expression about sisters? Chance made us sisters, choice made us friends. That can be applied quite neatly to the Wordsmithers, as well.

So now, drink in hand, I stand at the corner of the room and look out at my Wordsmith classmates, drinking, laughing, dancing under the lights at our reunion. We all went through it together, and we all emerged knowing more. We each took away something a little different, perhaps, yet this common thread has been woven into a rich and beautiful tapestry.

Here, hold my drink. I want to go dance….

State of the Union

Hello my TALU friends. We're taking a break from the linky party for one more week.

In the meantime, I thought I'd do "State of the Union Address", since it's the start of the new year and all.

I started this blog last March. Granted, I was moving over from my old blog, so I brought a small following with me, but I'm still amazed at how it's grown.

For instance, my page views per month have increased about 10-fold.
My followers have grown from 17 to nearly 400.
I've been honored to be guest-posted on some AWEsome blogs.
Probably a day doesn't go by that I don't get requests to do guest-posts on my blog, or do reviews, or advertise.
I've been featured a number of times on BlogHer.
I've been voted into Top 25 blogs for two different Circle of Moms contests.
Once I arrived there, I've maintained my first-page status on Top Mommy Blogs pretty consistently, and have even flirted with the top 10 briefly (so close!).
I've been having great fun learning all about blog hops, and I even co-host the wonderful TALU Tuesday!

And here are some of my most popular posts of the past year...

What the....

I Am My Mother. And....

A Lab. Never Again....

Time To Say Goodbye

Inspiration Sunday

Laundry, Simplified

The Cost of Sustainability

What I've Learnt In My Year of Chickens

Straight From the Horse's Mouth

Chili Dip

In looking at the list, I see a mixed bag of topics: random/funny things in our family, farm stuff, recipes, household tips, random/funny thoughts in general.

Anyway, reason for this post is twofold.

First and foremost:

You - all my wonderful readers - is what makes this such a fulfilling undertaking. I love your comments, I love my followers, I love seeing my page views go up and up, I love the votes you give me on all my annoying contests. You are an amazing group, and I love writing for you. Thanks from the heart of my bottom. Scratch that. From the bottom of my heart. Love you guys!

Secondly: I would love to hear what you would be interested in seeing more of. More farm stuff? More tips? More adoption-related pieces? More pictures?  Please let me know.

Thanks again, people.  And have a WONDERFUL new year!

TALU Tuesday (and Sandy)

First of all, we made it through hurricane Sandy just fine, though we were in her direct path. Lots of rain and wind, and a flooded barn, but no household damage or flooding or power loss. The pond filled to the point of overflowing its banks, and the barn got flooded, but more on that Friday.

But today it's Tuesday, so....

I-Need-Therapy-Thursday: Time Out

I'm so bummed.

After 15 years of being away, I'm starting back to work again soon.

And while the thought of giving up a good chunk of "free" time is making me bummed, part of what bothers me is that I think I'm going to have to cut back in bloggy world.

I think, I think I'll be able to continue with my regular schedule. But one of the things that eats up a BIG chunk of time with all this is replying to comments. Not because I'm writing well thought-out responses, but b/c my stinkin' internet is so bad that every time I hit "reply", I have to wait like 30 seconds to get the box, and then as soon as I type out the first few words, the whole box goes up in smoke and I have to start over again.

Ugh.

So, although it makes me feel sad, and incredibly rude, I'm probably going to have to stop replying to comments.  Wah.

Now, if you need me to answer a question, you can always email me (farmbeachgal@yahoo.com) or leave me a message on FB, and I'll get back to you.  And I'll still be reading all your wonderful comments, I just won't be replying to them.

I'm so sorry.

I hope we can still be friends.

A hostess to a link party.

The Tuesday Archive Link-Up, or TALU as all the kids are calling it.

What is this "link" thing, you ask?

If you're like me, you hear archive and you think dusty libraries and cobwebs.
You hear link and you think sausage I mean golf, b/c I'm so, you know, fit and active.
You hear party and you think either birthday cake and silly pointy hats or cocktails and tasty little appetizers.

Well, I'm here to tell you that the Tuesday Archive Link-Up is none of those things and all of those things. It is a wondrous sharing of entertaining blog posts by lovely and talented bloggers.

It is a place where you can pull your treasured old posts out of those cobwebby archives, dust them off, and give them new life where they will be seen and enjoyed by untold millions OK, thousands of viewers.

See, this link-up is hosted by several people, who, all together have thousands upon thousands of followers. So when you link your post up with this party? Your post will show up on all their blogs, to all of their followers.

So your traffic will increase.

Big time.

It's that simple.

So without further adieu, here's what you do...
see what I did there?

Link up your post using the linky tool below.

Visit the hosts and leave a comment to say hi!

Try to visit three or more of the blogs linked up and leave a comment. They'll all be doing the same, so it's like a giant hippie love fest. Bring your own flowers.

Oh and when you comment? Put in the secret code "TALU" (Tuesday Archive Link-Up) and then give a little wink so we'll all know what you're talking about.

Have fun!

Here are your hosts, wonderful gals every one....

Jennifer, author of I Am Not Superwoman

Jessica, author of Sugar In My Grits

Stephanie, author of Our Marriage Adventure

Anne, author of Life On The Funny Farm

Angelica, author of My Daily Pages

Debbie, author of Wrinkled Mommy

And here is the linky thingy...

Ungrateful Curs

Couple days ago, one of my readers nominated my blog for not one, but TWO awards.

The reader? A dog.

That's right, the dog (who may or may not be going by the name of Prudence) blogs over at A Coonhound's Tales.

Have any of MY six slobbery dog food inhalers ever nominated me for anything?

Nope. Not once.

Ungrateful curs.

Yes, I'm talking to you, you great big festering, ear-infected flea bag! After all I've done for you! And you too, you little trembling-scared-of-your-own-shadow rat! Ingrates!

Anyway, the awards that the considerate pooch over at A Coonhound's Tales bestowed upon me are

and

The requirements for the One Lovely Blogger award are:

Thank the person who nominated you and link back to them in your post.
Share 7 things about yourself.
Nominate other bloggers you admire.
Contact your chosen bloggers to let them know.

Beautiful Blogger Award rules are the same, except they don't really care to know 7 things about me.

Hmph.

Sooo.... 7 things. Let's see.

Actually? I just looked over the 7 things about the dog that nominated me, and I think it's safe to say we have several things in common, so I'm just gonna glom on here....

1) I love car rides, unless we're going to the V.E.T.

Same. I cannot TELL you how much I hate going to the vet.

2) I'm a cat food fanatic!

It's true! I'm not just saying it so I don't have to come up with a fact about myself. I loveeee cat food.

No. No I don't.

3) Speaking of kitties, many of you might not know that I share my home with *cough* a few.

At last count, I think we have four. Milky, Mamfy, Mali and Punkin.
Hang on a sec...
Hey hon? How many cats do we have?
.....
He says we have about 27, but that doesn't sound right to me. It's probably four.

4) Even 'tho I have my crazy, high energy moments, there's nothing better than cuddling on the couch with my people!

Well, Idk about having my high-energy moments, but I do like cuddling on the couch with my people.

5) My favorite treat is peanut butter in my kong, followed by bully sticks.

OK, I DO enjoy a nice peanut butter snack, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna stick my tongue inside a bacteria-laden kong to try to get it out. I prefer my PB on bread or crackers, thank you very much.
I'm not even going to comment on "bully sticks".

6) My favorite place (besides home) is the Barker Lounge. They really "get me" there!

Believe me, if they would let me in the Barker Lounge, I would so go. But alas, they keep carding me, then turning me away at the door.

7) Even 'tho I have a big bark, I'm really just a big love bug!

So true for me, too.

OK, so what else?
Thanks, check.
Share 7 things, check.
Stick the award logos on my blog, check.
Nominate other bloggers. OK.

I chooose....

Mind-Bloggling

I'm having a serious identity crisis. It's bad enough I don't know what kind of Mom to be from one moment to the next, I don't even know what kind of blogger to be, either.

When I joined up with Top Mommy Blogs, I had to choose a category for my blog.
This was not easy, my friend. Not easy at all.
Top Mommy Blogs - Click To Vote!

I have an adoption blog.
No, a family life blog.
Maybe I'm more of a humor blog.
No, not quite.
Special needs?
Pets, perhaps.
Stay at home? House and garden? Hobby?

I don't know, I don't KNOW, I tell you!

When I be-bop around the blogs I follow, I get confused and jealous. Everyone seems to be secure in their identities but me.

I read Nicole from Ninja Mom and I think, she's a humor writer. She has such a clever sense of humor and she's relatable and funny. I want to be like her.

But then next I read Jen from People I Want To Punch in the Throat or Kim from Let Me Start By Saying and I say to myself, I want to be irreverantly snarky and pee-your-pants funny like them. Just call it like it is and make no apologies.

Or like Allison from Motherhood, WTF? who, when she writes about the frustrations of raising her tykes, leaves me wiping a tear or two from my eyes (and perhaps my legs), and saying, yeah, I know, I KNOW!

After drying my tears of laughter, I'm on down the list to Lori from Five of My Own. She crystallizes what I feel about adoption. She moves mountains to help the orphans in this world, and I am left feeling like I want to do more. I need to do more. I WILL do more, by God!

But the second I get down off my bloggy soapbox, I read Alphamamma from Kate's Wish or Denise from Fostering a Blessing and I think, that's who I want to be. Just write about the good times and the bad, the ups and the downs, of life in a crazy family with older adopted kids, dealing with RAD and PTSD, helping others to become aware....

Then once I start feeling all introspective and home/family-centered, I read Laura from Heavenly Homemakers and think, that's it. Simple. Homemaking. Family. Spiritual. Keep it grounded, keep it soothing.

Homemaking? Home cooked meals? How about
Ree Drummond from Confessions of a Pioneer Woman? She blogs about her family, her ranch, great recipes for yummy comfort food. And she does it all while managing to be laugh-out-loud funny in a G-rated way. I want to be able to do that. You don't need to drop the F-bomb every third word to be funny! And she's got a relatively big family and lots of animals, just like me!

For that matter, so does Sam from My Barefoot Farm! And she keeps a clean blog, too! She's the consummate homemaker, she raises seven kids and milks a cow and she keeps bees and she quilts and homeschools! I want to be like HER, dammit!

But I feel like I don't always have enough going on to keep that kind of a blog full and interesting. I don't have a cow. I don't have bees. I don't homeschool. My life is so dull.

So maybe I'll be more like Roosterinn from What to Blog About and make it a mix of what's going on now, plus quaint stories of days-gone-by, and throw in a little good cookin' to boot.

But what about the humor stuff and the adoption stuff and the large family and special needs and grounded-spiritual-homemaking stuff!!???

Like a middle school girl, I don't know who I want to be. I asked this identity question once at a blog conference, and was told in a placating way, "just be yourself". But if being myself means I closely resemble Sybil in a mental line-up, I don't really know how that helps me.

Guess I'll just have to be OK with who I am, and what my blog is. It won't be all things to all people, but that's alright. I'm not all things to all people either.

I can live with it.

********

All that being said, give me a shout and let me know what it is you like to read about on my blog! I would love to know....

Farm Friday - Frightening

Last week, I wrote a post about planting pumpkins.

See my picture of the cute little punkin plants pushing up through the soil in an orderly fashion?

But holy Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, now they're HUGE. Monstrous, even.

Take a look see...

No pumpkins yet, but I can see little buds of flowers tucked up under their gargantuan leaves. Judging from the number, we're going to have a boatload.

They're also shooting out these little curly tendrils, which fall somewhere between pretty and scary....

Even the gargoyle is frightened...

Hey guys and gals, guess what? I'm at BlogHer today! I'm hoping I might bump into one or two of my favorite bloggers while I'm there, in between learning all kids of bloggy things. Look for me! I'll be the painfully shy, socially awkward bumpkin with unmanicured hands, comfortable shoes, and frizzy hair.

That's My Girl!

So if you stopped in yesterday, you saw a picture of my beautiful daughter Rosie all gussied up for the 8th grade graduation dinner dance (she's on the left, in pink)

Fred didn't get home till after she left for the dance, so he was really looking forward to when she returned home, so he could see how pretty she looked.

I had showed him the pictures on the computer, and we were shaking our heads in disbelief at how grown up she had become, how elegant she looked.

The time finally arrived. From the dogs barking, we knew she had gotten dropped off from her ride.

We heard her shoes clip-clopping as she ran along the deck to the kitchen door.

The door opened and she swirled in in a heartbeat, her cheeks flushed and her dress billowing all around her.

She was a vision of feminine grace.

Fred: Rosie, you look beautiful! How was the dance?
Me: Yes, come sit down and tell us all about it!
Rosie: Can't now. I gotta go change so I can hunt rats with Garrett and James in the barn! Here, hold my fish....

And she was gone. And I was left, quite literally, holding the bag (of the beta fish she won at the dance).

Fred (to me): The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?

Liebster Tales

As my kids would say,

Cool beans.

A fellow blogger presented me with the Liebster Award!

She said to me, she said:

"Because your blog brings me happiness and a sense of comfort..."

I know, right? How nice is that?

So, Miss Kelly Williamson, I say to you, a humble thanks. For the kindness.

And now for the rules:

The Liebster Blogger Rules are:

1. Thank the one who nominated you by linking back (check - above).
2. Nominate five blogs with fewer than 200 followers (check - below).
3. Let your nominees know by leaving a comment on their sites (check - any minute now).
4. Add the award image to your site (check - above).

And now for the newest nominees:

Lissy from Giggles and Screams.
B/c I've BTDT, but now I get to look back and laugh when you're going through it.

Denise, from Fostering a Blessing.
Because I've never seen anyone try so hard, and think of others before themselves as selflessly.

Kristi Carver, from Kristi Carver's Blog.
Because you are perfectly imperfect, you make me laugh, and you show me good food.

Linda from The Whatnot Shop.
Because you are funny. Because you are real.

Joy from Joy's Book Blog.
Because I like your goal-oriented approach to things.

So. Now that this is posted on my blog, I am off to drop notes in their inboxes. It's like May Day, only with no baskets. And just a tad late.

Thanks again!

PS: This just in.... I found out last night that Linda Hatton, one of my nominees, also named me in the Liebster! So here's a shout out back at her, both as a nominatee, and a nominater. Thanks, Linda!

Poised

OK, how cool is this?

I just Googled "I am my mother. And..."

and there at the top of the page was the Scary Mommy link for my guest post!

For someone like me who's very much small potatoes in bloggy world, this was, needless to say, head-swelling.

See, usually, I get about (mumble-mumble -- a figure in the hundreds) page views per day.

Jill Smokler, aka Scary Mommy, gets a million and a half per freakin' month. I said million. As in million. Which means untold thousands tune in on a daily basis.

And in this day of "sharing" and forwarding and what-not, that figure becomes quie a bit larger.

For my post, I have no idea how many people viewed it, but close to 1700 shared it. And if you figure each of those people shared it to their closest 100 FB friends or Tweeps, that means that my piece was potentially seen by

think, think

170,000.

And if only 10% of THOSE people shared it, that means

(concentratey face)

something like a cajillion people saw it.

I am poised for world domination, if my calculations are correct, by noon on Weds.

Heady stuff for a SAHM/farmgirl.

Pretty soon I can quit my dayjob of shoveling manure and picking up hairballs and making grilled cheese sandwiches.

Those things probably ought not be in a sentence together.

But fear not. Just like the lottery-winning janitors, I shall continue to hang out here and regale you with tales of buckets of rats and road trips to hell from time to time. That's just how I roll.

No matter how many jillions of people view my blog, I still need your votes on Top Mommy Blogs! Just one click of this button (below) and you've voted. You can vote every day!

Not Such a Scary Mommy: Jill Smokler

Wow.

All my bloggy friends are going to be SO jealous.

I got to meet THE Jill Smokler last weekend!

The Scary Mommy herself.

Met her.
Spoke to her.
Got her autograph.
Got a picture with her.

Oh yeah, uh-huh.

Last week I was browsing through the blogs I follow, and when I got to hers, she said she was doing a book-signing not from from where I live.

KIDS! Who wants to go to Barnes and Noble tomorrow?!

So I loaded up the car with about five of them (or so) and got there just in time for her reading to start.

I laughed, I cried, I found myself.

And then she did a wonderfully entertaining Q & A session.

And then of course I bought the book. And got in line. And like I said,

Met her.
Spoke to her.
Got her autograph.
Got a picture with her.

Jealous much?

Oh, and I don't know if I told you all this (I found out about a week ago), but she is featuring one of my posts
ON HER BLOG
on April 26th.

Mark the date on your calendars so you can be sure to see my name up in lights.
And then you can go there (Scary Mommy.com) and comment and share, share, share! How much fun does THAT sound like, right?

Anyway, here are a couple pictures of her book, her autograph, and the two of us posing as old besties.

She didn't need to go and write "Stay scary", though. As you can see from the picture, I am already quite scary enough, and have no true desire to stay that way.

Oh, and PS? She also gave me some advice when I told her I was shopping for an agent, and trying to build my platform. She said I should switch to a fan page on FB, not just a regular-ol' FB page with friends. So I did. So now you can click on the little thumbs-up button on my sidebar (just below my followers) to "like" me. Yay!

Thanks, Jill!

I still have Top Mommy Blogs, of course. Just one click of this button (below) and you've voted. You can vote every day!

I Think I'm Back In Middle School

Looks like there was quite a bit of drama over on Circle of Moms.

I guess when they ran the Adoption Blogs contest last year, it was suggested to the powers that be that they open it up to include not just adoptive Moms, but other people involved in the adoption triad: birth mothers, adoptive Moms, and adoptees. A wonderful idea, in theory.

So they did that. Only problem is, there's just a lot of drama entangled in these two camps. It seems many of both the adopee-rights activists and the adoptive parents are very sensitive, in a polarizing way, about issues they feel strongly about. It stands to reason, I suppose. I kind of got into it with one of them once, and it was not pretty. Such a shame, as I really think we could learn from each other, but it's probably no different than anything else: pro-life vs pro-choice, dem vs republican, breast vs bottle, you name it.

Here is the Circle of Moms announcement about dropping the contest:

Top 25 Adoption Blogs by Moms – 2012

UPDATE: After serious consideration, we have decided to cancel our Adoption Blogs by Moms – 2012 contest. Our Top 25 program is meant to celebrate, connect, and support mom bloggers. Following some feedback from participants in our 2011 contest, we decided to make this year's Top 25 more inclusive. In doing so, we unknowingly stepped into a very sensitive issue and debate, and we apologize to all the moms who have been offended, no matter what your position on adoption is. We're committed to finding a way to give all parties in the Adoption Triad a voice on Circle of Moms. If we run a Top 25 Adoption Blogs in the future, we'll consult with mom bloggers in each part of the Adoption Triad on how to create a supportive contest where all bloggers would feel welcome and respected by Circle of Moms and by all participants. We appreciate the time and energy every participant put into this contest during the past week, and we sincerely regret that we can't reward those efforts in the way we had planned to when we launched the contest.

Are you a mom who blogs about adoption or foster parenting? Whether you're an adoptive mom, foster mom, adult adoptee, fostered adult, or mother who placed a child for adoption, we're looking for mom bloggers who write about adoption or foster parenting in a supportive, positive way.

Voting ended on Apr 26, 2012 at 4pm PT. Top 25 Adoption Blogs by Moms – 2012 is now closed.

Anyway, I wanted to thank all of you wonderful people for voting for me. I know if the contest had continued to play out, you would have gotten me into the top 25, easy peasy. Y'all are the BEST!

But fear not. There's still a vote-for-me contest goin' on. There's always a vote-for-me contest goin' on. Top Mommy Blogs! Just one click of this button (below) and you've voted. You can vote every day!
