Wordless Wednesday: Spring has Sprung

After taking an extended winter vacation, my hens are back to business.

I wish I could take that much time off and still get paid.

Farm Friday - Wipe 'N Wash (giveaway)

Not so long ago, I had the thought that I should get this blog to give back to me in some sort of tangible way
in other words, apart from all the warm fuzzies I get every day from my wonderful readers.

So I contacted the good people over at Manna Pro.

And I said to them, I said,

"Good folks at Manna Pro, whaddya say to sending me some of your fine chicken products for me to use, and then I'll write up a review on my blog?"

And they replied, "But of course!"

Sometime later a few packages showed up on my doorstep. These fine folks sent me four CASES of products for my poultry pleasure. How dandy is that?

Did I just say "for my poultry pleasure?"
My God.  Who AM I?

And so now I bring to you the review of the first of these products. You might want to get a pen out to take notes....

Wipe 'N Wash
Egg Cleansing Towelettes
(Here's what the container says)

There's nothing better than fresh eggs!  Clean your eggs quickly and easily with convenient Wipe 'N Wash Egg Cleansing Towelettes from Manna Pro.  Each towelette will clean up to a dozen eggs and once used can be placed directly in the compost bin!  Wipe 'N Wash towelettes are made with recyclable paper and a natural blend of plant-derived cleansers to ensure your eggs are cleaned safely and easily, revealing their natural beauty.

These towelettes come in one of those pop-up containers like cleaning wipes for
the bathroom or kitchen.  Perfect choice, because I keep a container right by my kitchen sink, so if I'm using eggs, and they're a little too dirty for my liking, I can just pull an egg towelette right out of the container.  Easy-peasy.

I LOVE that these are safe to use, with no harsh detergents or chemicals.  I certainly don't want to take something fresh and natural like one of my pretty, farm-fresh eggs, and scrape it down with a bunch of chemicals before eating.  Kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

I love even more that these towelettes can go right in the compost pile!  After all, most chicken-folk (myself included) tend to be all about keepin' it green, so composting makes us very happy (we're an easy-to-please bunch, chicken-folk).

Convenient..........check
Easy to use..........check
Safe.....................check
Earth-friendly......check

Bottom line: You should "check" out Manna Pro's Wipe 'N Wash Egg Cleansing Towelettes!

Would you like one of these wonderful containers?  How about I do a giveaway?

Rules:
1) Like my Facebook page,
2) Add yourself as a blog follower on my blog ("Google Friends Connect" in my sidebar)
3) Leave a comment on this post, telling me you've done all of the above.
You can say,
"Liked, followed, entered."
Or you can say,
"Check, check, check."
Or if you're feeling super confident, you can try,
"I came, I saw, I conquered."
Or if you really want to impress me (and this will count like a 2nd entry), you can say that in Latin.  No cheating and looking that up on Google, now.

I'll choose a winner at random next week.  In fact, I'll give away a few.  They sent me a box full of these, so I'll keep a few for myself, some I gave to my chicken friends (and you know who you are), and the rest I'll give away in this contest.  See that?  Your chances just improved, and you haven't even entered yet.

What are you waiting for?  Enter now!

Good luck!

I've lost my homesteader virginity.

Some might think I lost it when I got goats.

Nah, that was just makin' out.

Some would say I lost it when I got chickens and started getting eggs.

Uh-uh. That would be more like 2nd base.

But raising chickens for meat?
Taking them to slaughter and then eating them?

Yep. Lost my virginity.

And while I'll admit I had a first-timer's jitters, it went just fine.

I loaded them into a dog crate in the back of the car.

The big boys wanted me to drop them off at the Amish Market on my way to the "chicken drop".

They were none too pleased driving there with a crate of chickens just the other side of their seat.

Ohhh, Mom, really? Do we have to drive there with the chickens?
Why are they making all that noise?
Why do they smell?
Oh my God, now they smell even worse! Did they POOP?
Open the windows!
Ahhhhhh!

Yeah. They just love me....

Anyway, like I said, other than offending the boys' delicate sensibilities, it went fine.

The place I took them to runs a smooth, efficient operation.

Though they process two or three hundred chickens there every Saturday morning, you would never know it from the look or the smell or the sound. It was quiet, it was clean, it was neat. Nothing behind closed doors, either, so you can see every step of the process, if you're so inclined.

So here they are  all buckled in and ready to go.
And I can now add feathers and chicken sh** to the stuff in my car that shouldn't be.

The drop.

Loaded back into the car for the ride home.
A little quieter. A little less poopy.

And then I came home, put one in the crockpot, a couple in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer.

And when the first chicken finished cooking and cooling, I pulled the meat off the bones and bagged it. And ate a few morsels.

And ohmygosh, YUM!

Next week I'll give you a breakdown on costs.

So what do you think? Are you proud of me? Disgusted?
Don't be shy, let me know....

Farm Friday - eggsciting

For all my fellow homesteaders, specifically all you newbies just receiving your first peeps, I wanted to share with you the glory that is finding your first egg.

It will be your time soon....

(written last August)
You'll never guess what's chillin' in my fridge right now.

It's
Small.
Brown.
Perfect.

It was found in the last nesting box in the row in the Hen House.

That's right, uh huh. We got our first egg. James found it on Weds morning.

And I went a little insane.

I was Steve Martin in his celebratory dance when his son caught the winning ball in Parenthood.

I became Jimmy Stewart doing his little parade dance to lock the remaining two dollars in the bank vault in It's a Wonderful Life.

I channelled Tom Hanks after he made fire in Castaway.

From the way I carried on, you'd think I'd laid the egg myself.

I searched the Pinternet in vain to find a crafty way to display my first egg on the wall at the entrance to my home to be preserved for evermore like the first dollar in a Mom and Pop business.

Instead I have taken some photographs.

The second picture? That's MY EGG sitting pretty and all snuggled up with MY VEGETABLES that I have grown.

I AM SELF-SUFFICIENT!
I AM A HOMESTEADER!
I AM A SUSTAINABLE-LIVING-FREAK!

I will close now. I am off to make a one-egg omelette with tomatos, peppers, scallions, and basil, with some cucumber slices on the side.
