It's cool.

Farm Friday - Floating
Couple weeks ago I had the vet out for a farm call. Horses and goats were due for shots.
Horses also needed their teeth floated.
For all you non-horsey folk, floating means filing
(I have no idea why).
Big, long, metal rasp gets shoved in their mouth and scraped back and forth over their teeth while their mouth is held open with a speculum, which closely resembles some kind of horrific medieval torture device.
The speculum is new to my vet's practice. They used to just use an unobtrusive little mouth guard, till one of the vets got his pinky finger bit off.
It's all fun and games till someone gets their finger bit off.
While it may be safer for the vets, the horses are not pleased with the process.
They require sedation.
Would you sit still for such a procedure?
Yeah. Me neither.
Bella and I captured a few pictures for you....
Now everyone go call up your dentists and thank them.

Her Day Planner is Full
I have a nickname for my dtr Rosie: Dub-cee-dub.
As in WCW.
As in "When Can We...?"
See, from the time she still sported her top-knot, she's always been one to ask,
"When can we....___________?" (fill in the blank).
When can we go to the park, when can we go bowling, when can we go to the creek, when can we go to the beach, the movies, the museum, a friend's house, etc, etc.
She is now and has always been wanting to go-go-go and do-do-do.
Take this summer, for instance. From the time school let out till end of July, I will have seen her only two weeks out of seven. She had one glorious week at home before going on a road trip with her bff to her Grandma's lakehouse in NC, where they have been dock-jumping, swimming, shopping, tanning, knee-boarding, water-skiing, and tubing. Less than a week after she gets back (and you can throw in soccer clinic during that week home), she will be jetting off to Australia of all places on a three week whirlwind tour with People to People. There she will be snorkeling, hiking, surfing, shopping, zip-lining, and flirting, no doubt, with Ozzy hotties while I sit home and wring my hands in distress and maternal angst.
She doesn't have too much of the rest of the summer planned out yet, save a week of family vacation and a day of working in a cameo in my sister's show that will be filmed at our house (and meeting a few celebrities while she's at it), but give her time.
I'm sure she'll come up with something.

A Tip For Tuesday
I made this menu board in my kitchen.
Just a little chalkboard paint is all it takes.
I put a few coats on the strip of wall next to my refrigerator. At the top, I wrote "Today's Specials", with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Below that I wrote about 30 or so of the dinners we eat most commonly.
I write the date next to each dinner I make, that way I can keep track of which dinners I've already made, so I don't repeat too often, and so I know when it's OK to reheat, and when I should pitch what's leftover in the fridge.
After I've gone shopping, I place a mark next to any of the dinners I've just bought the stuff for, so I know what I have on hand to make in the coming week.
I've had this up for a few weeks, and it's worked out really well.
Plus, now when I get asked the question "What's for dinner?" 47 times a day, I can answer "Look at the board" instead of ""spaghetti" or "tacos."
Wait. I guess that doesn't help much, does it?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Sing it Aretha.
Unless your last name is Flintstone and you live under a rock, you've no doubt heard the horrific story of the teens/preteens that tormented the poor 68 year-old bus monitor. Not content with mere bullying, they recorded their assault, and then proudly posted it to YouTube.
Fortunately, the bullying buck stopped there. The video was spread alright, but spread due to people's outrage that children would treat an elder in this way. These boys called her names, cursed at her, told her they'd stab her, cut her, p*ss on her house and sh** in her mouth, they POKED at her, and generally kept up their spawn of Satan act till she was in tears.
If you think you can stomach it, you can watch it here:
I hope...no, I know my kids not only would never ever EVER do something like this, but that they would stop punks like those in their tracks if they ever saw such a thing.
But once upon a time, those kids were little babies in their mother's arms, too. Just like mine. Just like yours. What happened between then and now?
Not enough people told them no.
Not enough folks held them accountable for their actions.
There were too many people making excuses for them, not demanding enough of them. Not enough respect, not enough contribution, not enough compassion.
And God's going to strike me dead for saying such a thing, but I'm even including the poor woman being tortured, among the group responsible for kids like this. An adult. In a position of authority. Not making them stop. Not taking down names.
As a group, we adults bemoan what has happened to "kids these days." We've shaped them, and yet we're displeased with the results:
*They're overweight, and yet adults are the ones placing sugar-filled vending machines in the cafeterias and plopping chicken nuggets and french fries on their lunch trays.
*They're too sedentary, but it's the adults giving them all the electronic gadgets under the moon and stars with no limitations on usage.
*We encourage them to do their best, but we're sure to heap praise and medals on them for their "participation."
*We want them to pay attention in class, and study, but when they get a 72% on a test, we slap a gold star on the paper and write "Good effort!"
*We expect them to be polite and well-mannered, but don't hold them accountable when they're not.
We as adults need to demand more of our kids. We get lazy and tired and don't feel like doing battle, but when we don't, this is the kind of thing that happens.
(Quotes by Lori Berger)
Let's ALL of us adults make a pact that we WILL NOT TOLERATE this any longer! Teachers, principals, bus drivers and monitors, store clerks, security guards, health professionals, coaches, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, neighbors.
Let's expect more.
Let's hold them accountable.

Farm Friday - The Testicles Have Left the Building
Author's Note #1: I can use this title for my blog post and still maintain my G (PG?) rating, because it's all in the name of animal husbandry.
Author's note #2: I wrote this post a little more than a year ago (on my other blog), but I thought I would repost it, as I have nothing else going on right now farm-wise for Farm Friday. Plus it's educational and I'm all about bringing things educational to my readers.
So here goes.....
Ah spring. I love the smell of antiseptic in the morning.
Today was the fateful day my yearling Finnegan was scheduled to get clipped. To change from colt to eunuch.
And I have captured it all on film for posterity.
If you tend to the squeamish, look away, look away now.
For there will be blood.
There will be body parts.....
Finnegan the yearling stud-muffin.
Starting to feel all woozy now that the juice is kicking in.
Down for the count.
Prepped and ready for surgery.
Vet M: "C'mon, buddy, where are your balls?"
And yes, he meant that quite literally.
They were being elusive and M had to go on an early Easter egg hunt.
Wait for it, wait for it.....
....and they're OUT!
The anesthesia has begun to wear off, but he's not ready for running around. M is tail surfing here to keep Finn's hindquarters upright and to keep him from taking off at a drunken gallop.
I'll call...on..my brother,when I need a hand,we all need somebody to lea-ean on.
I want my Mommy!
Afterwards, I headed inside and cleaned up, then picked up the phone to call my neighbor. She had asked if I could let her know when Finn got gelded. She wanted to turn her horses (including a mare) into the field adjoining my pasture, and didn't want any fence shananigans from Young, Handsome and Intact.
So I said, "Hey Sandy, it's your neighbor, Anne. Just wanted to let you know the testicles have left the building. My pasture is now a testicle-free zone."
Most neighbors ask to borrow a cup of sugar, or the snow-blower.
But if you're my neighbor, you're gonna get testicle talk.

Reason #796 Why I Love Her
I was grocery shopping last weekend.
Bella was helping me.
I asked her to get the bananas.
Next thing I know, she's loading a boatload of bananas into the cart.
"Bella, why did you get so many?"
"You told me to get a bunch!"

A Tip for Tuesday
On a rainy summer's day,
a couple of years ago,
when all the kids were crying in unison,
"I'M BORED!"
I sat their little behinds down and we made an activity tree.
On the trunk of the tree, there are two "Family Fun" knots: one for local things like going for walks or mini-golf and one for big trips, like going to the beach or an amusement park.
Each branch represents a different type of activity, and
each branch has leaves with specific suggestions of things to do.
For instance, on the "Table Top" branch, there are puzzles, rock-painting, and fabric pens.
On the "Kitchen" branch you can find suggestions for making brownies or water ice or crepes, as well as website suggestions for recipes.
There are also a few prompts for imagination activities, like running a doll hospital or a store,
as well as plenty of ideas for fun things to do outdoors, such as butterfly catching, building tree forts, and running a lemonade stand.
On the bottom, we decided to add a few flowers representing charitable acts, such as visiting an elderly neighbor, or collecting toys to donate to charity.
I also wrote down some chores they could help out with.
Just in case, you know, they forget. Ahem.
Anyway, the kids are a bit older now, and we don't use it as much anymore, but it was nice to have a "menu" of sorts, to help them break down the boredom and figure out what in the wide world there was to do on those longggg summer days.
What do you do when YOUR kids complain of summer boredom?
