Farm Friday: Sandy

So Hurricane Sandy came through last Monday and Tuesday.

Although we were smack-dab in her direct path, we were far enough inland that we didn't have any real problems.

We never lost power, although if we had, we would have been OK with our hard-wired generator.

We had several inches of rain, but with our house's elevation, never got any household flooding.

Lots of mature trees around us, but all the wind knocked down was smaller branches and leaves.

The only real problem was the barn. Our barn always gets flooded whenever we get a heavy rain, and Sandy was a bit more than a heavy rain.

While SOME of our dogs were hard at work keeping our barn free of rats (ha),
others were riding out the storm all cozied up on the couch.

Tuesday morning, we found a lot of water still in the barn, though a good bit of it had receded.

We found a Romeo and Juliet rat pair that had lost their lives in the water.

Why does this make me so sad?

And sadly, we found one of our meat chicks had drowned, as well. Not in the water rushing through the barn, but in a bucket I had placed to catch a bad drip.

I couldn't bring myself to take that picture.

Rest in peace little chickie, rest in peace. Your brethren will be following you into the afterlife shortly.

got drama?

Anyway, I hope you all fared well in the storm.  Please chime in and let me know how you did!

  1. The star crossed rats were the perfect touch to this post.

  2. I was glad to hear you came through Sandy relatively unscathed. We didn't lose power at all and didn't lose any trees either. So thankful for God's protection.

  3. Aw, poor chicken. I'm guessing the disposal of the chicken was a lot easier than our disposal of the pig that drowned itself :) As for the mice, I hate mice, and even I thought that Romeo and Juliet look was sad. Glad you all made it through with little trouble.

  4. Good to know you made it through relatively unscathed-- so sad about the chicken {would be in a bucket, sounds so...chickenish}. Not exactly saddened by the demise of the ill fated squeakers, they are rodents after all-- but still, oddly touched {lol}

  5. It good to see you were not majorly affected my Sandy. I could just imagine how difficult it was to clean up the mess though. I enjoyed reading your post on the sandwiches and I am following you now.
I would love for you to follow back.

  7. Thanks everyone! Glad to know I was not the only crazy person that thought the "star-crossed/ill-fated" drowned rat lovers seemed a bit...sad.

  14. So aware of how much worse it could be. We had no power for about 9 days; no heat either. I confess generator envy! I wrote about my temptation to grumble about the Hurricane. You might enjoy. http://www.ourstoriesgodsglory.blogspot.com/2012/11/counting-my-complaints-instead-of.html
Also, not sure if you're familiar with Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts...an amazing book you could win on my website www.CirclesOfFaith.org. Come on over!

  16. Thanks for all the comments and well-wishes. Poor south Jersey and NY got hit with another bad storm a week later, with snow and high winds. More power outages , more downed trees, more flooding. I guess what they say is true: when it rains, it pours. Pls continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers....

  17. I really enjoyed this post and all the comments. The comment about your post on sandwiches piqued my curiosity and I went on to read that one too.
It was so funny and I agree with all the comments too, so have nothing more to add except that it really made me laugh. I even had to show my husband the pictures of the lunches. He also agreed: way to much time on their hands!! Thank you for the laugh.
