Gotta have me some Pinterest every few
Some of the things I see on there make me all swooney and teary and fill me with a false sense of confidence.
Other things leave me scratching my head and muttering "What the...?"
Case in point: school lunches.
There seems to be a new trend in getting all cutesy and creative when packing your kids' lunch for school.
Now, for someone like me that doesn't even make her kids ANY lunch, a PB-and-J would be considered cutesy and creative.
But these lunches are, well they're frightening to me, to be quite honest.
Here are a few examples...
Because first of all, if you have that much time on your hands in the monrings when you're packing your kids off to school, you're doing something wrong. Have you never heard of the snooze button?
Secondly, do you bubble-wrap the Tuppperware and personally deliver lunch to your kid at the cafeteria? Because no way in hell will it look like that once your darling has opened the lid of his Avengers lunchbox after it's been tossed around on the bus and in the coat cubby all morning.
Thirdly, well I have no thirdly. I'm speechless.
Like I said, I don't do lunches for my kids anymore. Haven't for a few years now. They are all perfectly capable of spreading penaut butter on bread and grabbing a fruit cup from the pantry. And they're usually better than I am at finding errant water bottles to fill.
And before you go getting all judgy on me for not nurturing my kids enough, I DO make them breakfast, so there. They get a hot breakfast
and no, it does look like this...
And I get to spend more time on my laptop looking up pictures of lunches created by Moms a little too close to the edge of sanity for my comfort level.
We all win.

DeleteI got the school lunches, but I had to pay with the card of shame: the free lunch card!
Yes we did that for a bit too! Then things got better and my mom's idea of fancy was canned sardines in mustard sauce. You know how that might have gone over in a lunch room! I never lived it down!

ReplyDeleteI just can't imagine what these lunches must look like by the time the kid opens the lid, Coop. I mean, can you picture the Moms instructing the kids on being "very careful" not to jostle the lunch box? I wonder if they hot-glue a little tiny level on top of the lunchbox...

I know, Denise. Those kinds of Moms frighten me a little, they really do. I think it's time for them to find a new creative outlet!

DeleteAMEN Anne, aye-men! Fancy 4 me is heating up soup and pouring it the thermos. If she wants cracker and cheese or fruit... she has working hands and feet - she can get it herself. No one makes and packs me a cutesy lunch. They get a home-cooked dinner every day (almost) and "fancy" weekend breakfasts (means anything not cereal). And that is pushing it. I don't have that kind of time. Geesh. True on the bubble-wrap! I could just imagine the kid opening the lunch and finding the starfish and spongebob in a compromising position. Tee-hee.

I completely agree! There's NO way those lunches are staying that way after all the running kids do and throwing their lunch pails in the cubbies. On top of that, I'd have to be up at like 3 am to make that freakin Angry Birds lunch. NO THANKS.

DeleteHahahahaha!!! I was just thinking halfway through the post, how those mamas have waaaay too much time on their hands. I think it is a cute idea and all, but seriously no way it stays like that. In my head if they have that much time to create those lunches they probably do hand deliver them.

Deletehaha I think once my daughter goes to school I might do something cute for her every wednesday or something to give her something to look forward to, but she's a toddler right now and I know that if I do something like this once, she'll stop eating until each and every one of her meals looks like this lol

DeleteThanks for stopping by. I love meeting new bloggers. I also love pinterest. My kids at age 10 started making they own lunches. For two reasons,one they got to pack what they wanted ( with in reason ) .Two I had to work so between getting them ready for school and my self ready for work. The morning were more of getting out of the house on time.'then being cutesy.

DeleteI usually get a kick out of seeing those bento luchboxes, but you're sooooooooo right. I never even thought about that before. Never mind that they'll be bouncing around on a bus and possibly hanging sideways in a locker, etc. With all those small cut pieces, half the stuff that gets packed in those is probably browned and wilted by the time lunch rolls around. :(

DeleteWow :-O. On Monday I'm trying to throw a lunch together and my son pulls out a stack of papers that he should have showed me on Friday or over the weekend. I had 10 minutes to spare (before the bus) to make a sandwich, not wash the grapes and sign something I didn't fully read. I WISH I WOULD....never mind ;-)

So funny and so true!! I've seen these on Pinterest also and my more creative friends on Facebook post theirs almost daily!! Seriously - do the kids really care? They're just going to eat it anyway.

ReplyDeleteI remember when Jello Jigglers were called Knox Blox (they didn't know you can just use Jello with less water for the same result yet) and my mother would use cookie cutters to cut out shapes Whoa baby. In the 80s, that was about as fancy as a lunch could get. And that was a rare treat. I make lunch for k-ster and myself every day and I HATE making lunch. No way would I take the time to make it cutesy. And he'd be laughed at at work anyway.
Our lunch "treat" back in the days when my Mom would pack our lunches, was a face drawn on fhe shell of a hard-boilef egg. I think my kids would DIE if I made them a "creative" lunch!
