What's the Skinny?

Someone interviewed me.

Woot-woot-WHAT?

That's right. One Ms Tori Tarvin from 'Skinny Mom' interviewed me.

Now, c'mon, hold the jokes. I know what you're thinkin'...

Q: Why aren't you skinny?
A: Because I loves me some donuts.

You're thinkin' that 'Skinny Mom' interviewing me is like '17' interviewing Meryl Streep.
Like 'Playboy' interviewing Mother Theresa.

Bring it. I can take it.

Hmmph.

Anyway (nose tossed haughtily in air), the interview starts off like this....

I love the fact that every week, we find a new family that virtually opens the door for us and let’s us stay awhile. This week, we are the guests of Anne. And we are lucky enough to be on a farm or as Anne has titled her blog “the Funny Farm.” Now, why is it so funny? Well, it’s not exactly a farm. By that we mean she doesn’t get up to the sound of a rooster to milk cows–there are none–or clean out stalls, or sell any of their produce. Here is why she considers her so-called “little patch of dirt” a farm:
“Because I usually have dirt under my fingernails and mud on my jeans.
Because the critters outnumber the humans by about 5 to 1.
Because we eat eggs from our chickens.
Most importantly, because it smells like a farm.”

With 6 teens and 3-4 dozen animals–and the occasional Foreign Exchange student–we can see why Anne has such a great sense of humor. This blog is chaotic and addicting to read. It’s like TLC without the commercials! There are heartfelt moments where Anne chronicles her son, James’, fight against RAD and PTSD and there are laugh out loud moments like her Mirth Mondays. Come laugh, cry and everything in between with Anne’s funny farm.

If you want to read the actual Q & A interview, click on over to Skinny Mom to read the rest.

Thanks!

TALU Tuesday (and Sandy)

First of all, we made it through hurricane Sandy just fine, though we were in her direct path. Lots of rain and wind, and a flooded barn, but no household damage or flooding or power loss. The pond filled to the point of overflowing its banks, and the barn got flooded, but more on that Friday.

But today it's Tuesday, so....

It's that time again!

Time for TALU Tuesday.

That's right, the Tuesday Archive Link-Up.

Time to pull your treasured old posts out of those cobwebby archives, dust them off, and give them new life where they will be seen and enjoyed by untold millions OK, thousands of viewers.

See, this link-up is hosted by several people, who, all together have thousands upon thousands of followers. So when you link your post up with this party? Your post will show up on all their blogs, to all of their followers.

Chicken-Scratch-Saturday: Quippsy

OK, so here's something a little different for me -- a paid review.

There's a brand-new social networking game in town, and its name is Quippsy.

They contacted me a while back and invited me to check them out. I did.

Pretty cool!

In a nutshell, Quippsy is a site for you to post all the cute, clever, funny things your kids say throughout the day.

You know, all those things that you later say,
"I wish I had written that down"?

Yeah, those.

Now you can, and without the fear of losing the receipt you wrote Junior's quipp on!

Quippsy is super easy to use. You can log-in through Facebook, then go ahead and post your quipps! Viewers vote the quipps as cute, smart or funny, and then each week the votes are tallied and the best from each category is chosen.

Now, you might be thinking that you already post the cute things your kid says on Facebook, so why do the same thing on Quippsy? I'll tell you why. On Facebook, all the memorable things your kid said or did will be buried under all the times you went to the gym or raked the leaves or took a picture of the dinner you just made. If you ever decide to compile them, you're sunk. With Quippsy, it's all in one place, AND, you'll have the option of compiling all these memories into a memory book! Can you say gift item? Plus, if you still want to post those things on Facebook, you can, right from Quippsy. What could be easier?

Once you join, you will have the option of signing up for a basic membership (free), or a gold membership ($10/year), and of course you can read all about these membership levels on site.

In fact, the good people at Quippsy created a custom "landing page" for all Life on the Funny Farm readers! Just click on over to Quippsy at this link and get the low-down on how to get started.

They are actually offering my LOTFF readers a FREE gold membership when they visit through this link. How awesome is that?

So what are you waiting for?  Head over to Quippsy today!

Wow, I really DID just sound like a commercial there, didn't I?  Maybe I have a new career ahead of me!

Farm Friday: Stress Relief

Whenever I'm in the middle of scratching 42,000 things off my to-do list, and I remember I have to run out to the barn to feed or water or fix or clean or shut in or let out, I think to myself...

Aaaaauuuuuuggggghhhhhh!!!!!

I don't have TIME for this nonsense!

That's it. I am getting rid of ALL the animals. All 54 of them.
Well. 16 of them are going to be offed in a few weeks, so I guess I shouldn't count them.

And my heart is racing a mile a minute and my brain is on overdrive trying to problem-solve three things at once.

But then I actually GO to the barn to do whatever it is, and things change.

The change goes like this:

stomp, stomp, stomp.

*&%#@! animals!

beatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeat

I don't have time to haul water buckets!
I don't have time to scoop feed!
flibbertywbitz...

pant-pant
heave

zixcyvbinym...

I don't....

well hello little chicky.

beatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeatbeat

Aren't you the cutest little thing ever, sitting on my foot.

beat-beat-beat-beat-beat-beat-beat

Scurry along now, so I can give you some nice, fresh water.

I brought you some treats.

Would you like a piece of French toast?

That's right, run along now with it.

Oooh, haha, don't let the others get it from you!

Chuckle.

beat.......beat.......beat.......beat.......beat......

Sigh....

Guess I'll keep 'em around a little longer.

I-Need-Therapy-Thursday: Horses Gone Wild

Rosie's home from soccer.

The boys are home from their morning job.

The pot roast is in the crock pot, and the kids are peeling up a storm for mashed potatoes.

It's laptop time....

I hear a knock on the door and think, "this can't be good". None of the neighbor kids come to play b/c, quite frankly, we kind of scare the bejesus out of them.

We get the occassional Jehovah's Witness, but not too often.

I'll bet Annabelle got out again. Her Invisible Fence collar has been on the fritz lately.

Can't hear what's being said over the din of the 42 five hounds of hell.

"Mommmmmm!"

Oh no.

"Our neighbor just said our horses are out."

Cripes.

That was the start of The Great Escape debaucle this past Sunday afternoon.

And I didn't handle it very well.

I threw on shoes, and grabbed my carkeys and a dog leash and ran out the door with Julie at my heels.

We found the errant horses only about 1/4 mile down the road, but they were all skittery b/c they're not used to the sound of their own feet clip-cloppin' on pavement, or cars driving by.

Only one of them had a halter on, and in my haste I had only brought one lead rope dog leash.

How to puzzle this out....

I walked slowly over to Pippin, the calmest and friendliest of the trio, and put the leash around his neck so the snap passed through the hand loop.

Sent Julie back to the house for more leads and halters, and some apples.

After she ran off, I was able to walk up to Finnegan and snap the free end of the leash to his halter, so the two ponies were connected together by the same rope, and I was standing in front of both of them.

Hmmmm. This was a recipe for decapitation.

I decided against trying to walk them that way, b/c no way in hell would that end well.

I waited awkwardly for Julie's return, while feeling a dozen judgemental eyes boring into my soul from curious neighbors. I knew what they were thinking....
How could she be so careless with her animals?
Why is she just standing there?
Why are they leashed?
Why are they so unkempt?
Why is she so unkempt?

I wanted to announce that I had just de-burred their manes and tails two days earlier and it's not my fault the tractor is broken and we can't mow the pasture and they're all full of burrs again and I would have done it today but I had to plunge a toilet and clean up a dog vomit and put away the two dozen cans of Progresso soup I got last Friday with the coupoons I ordered and the Pioneer Woman was on! But I didn't think I would be doing myself any favors.

After an eternity, Julie got back. I clipped each of the ponies on their own lead, but Genevieve would have nothing to do with us.

So I started leading the ponies back home, hoping Gen would follow along after her boys.

She did.

And I got them tucked safely back in the side pen, and sent a couple of the kids over to the neighbor with a dozen eggs to say thanks for the neighborhood watch.  I commenced a check of the fence line.

Ah hah. A gate was open.

Curious.

Fast forward to yesterday.

Another knock on the door.

Another neighbor, letting one of my kids know my horses were out.

Again.

This time I was more prepared. I grabbed three leads and two halters. And my camera.
Daniel got the apples, but as his pants had no pockets, he put them in his shirt pockets. He looked.... interesting. A buxom young lad.

And we headed off down the road in search of our runaways.

We ran into Henry, one of our Amish neighbors. He looked me and my gender-confused looking son up and down for a minute and then said,

"You lookin' for your horses?"

Since we were walking down the road looking left right and backwards, armed with halters and leads, it was a pretty good guess.

He let me know that if I walked up the hill and through the field I would find them.

And we did. And we did.

And once again we got them back, but not without a great deal of stress and sweat and angst and judgemental neighbors.

And as it turns out? Some rotten neighbor kids are opening the gate and letting them out. The country version of smashing mailboxes, I guess. So right after I got Daniel to school, I headed straight for WalMart for chains and padlocks. And now all three gates are locked up good and tight, and I just needs me a shotgun to set on the porch with.

I sent another dozen eggs out to the second watchful neighbor.

And now I'm almost out of eggs.  Maybe along with the shotgun, I need more chickens....

Mirth Monday: Glass Ceiling

Recently, I wanted to get some chickens.

I checked around locally, but the only thing I could find available was roosters.

That would not do.

So I picked up the phone and made some calls.

You'll never guess what I found...

Hens!

Binders full of hens!

Chicken-Scratch-Saturday: 6 Ways to Boost Your Teens Self Esteem

I have a guest-post for you today, written by the lovely and talented Debra Johnson.
Take it away, Debra!

**************

6 Ways to Boost Your Teens Self Esteem

Remember your teen years? They probably weren’t your favorite, so you can relate to your teen when they seem to be feeling down about themselves. Boosting your teens self-esteem takes a little tender, love and care from you. Here are 6 different things you can do to help your teen through their difficult time.

Get them physically active: You know that satisfied feeling you get after you take an evening walk or job for 30 minutes? That’s normal and it happens to everyone after an exercise. Raising your heart rate and increasing your blood flow does the body good because it releases your body’s naturally happy hormones, endorphins. Get your teen active by signing them up for a sports team or even getting them a bike to bike after school. A 30 to 45 minute exercise each day is healthy for the whole family!

Get them involved in the community: Teens seem to forget that life ain’t all that bad. It’s not their fault they think like that, every teen does and has thought that way. It just takes a few simple reminders that their life isn’t shabby after all. Helping those who are less fortunate in your community is beneficial not only to your teen but to your community. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities, whether a soup kitchen, animal shelter or a nursing home, get your child involved. Helping someone is good for the soul.

Pick a hobby: A teens life centers around friends, family and school. Talk to your teen and see what interests them. Do they like to paint, write, and listen to music? Ask questions and find something that they can do that will make them happy. Focusing on a task that makes them happy will help their self-esteem.

See a counselor: Hormones are to blame in a lot of cases with teens that have low self-esteem, but sometimes it can be more. Some schools offer free counseling to their students, consider having your child speak to a counselor. Teens tend to have an easier time expressing their feelings to someone they don’t know rather than someone they do know.

Start at home: Sometimes low self-esteem can start at home. Take a step back and examine your family’s home life. If there is any stress like financial problems in your family, this stress can be sensed by the teen and the teen starts to stress. Do your best to keep a positive environment for your children.

Check out their friends: Your teens friends have a huge impact on their lives and if they are surrounded with negative influences, chances are your teen will mimic this. You want your teens friends to benefit and better their lives, not hurt them. If your teen is having trouble making friends with the right crowd, consider sports teams, scholar groups or other teens who volunteer.

Farm Friday: Chicken ADHD

So a good friend of mine is putting her house on the market because she wants a place in the country where she can keep her critters out in the open, and not hidden away in a secret chamber like Anne Frank.

The realtor came by to appraise her house and saw chickens in the garage.
Told her they must go.
She has some notion that potential buyers might not want to look any further once they saw chickens in the house. Sheesh.

So anyway, needless to say, I am now chicken-sitting said poultry. I took receipt of them a couple days ago, and felt like I was part of the underground-railroad.

We quickly got them settled into the Henhouse with the others.

Others being my 13 layers, 10 meat-bird chicks, and 6 layer-breed cockarels that I had heretofore described as styrofoam packing peanuts.

We oriented them to the feed and water, and sat back chattin' like the overall-wearin', hay-chewin' farmgals that we are, and watched the hens get acquainted with their new digs.

To no one's surprise, a fight broke out between one of the newcomers and one of my Wyandottes.

Me: Do you think we should break it up?
T: No, let's see if they can resolve this on their own.
we're mothers first, chicken stewards second

And we watched them fly at each other, puff up, peck at each other's wattles and combs, and cuss at each other.

At one point, in the thick of their squabble, they both stopped and turned to look off in a corner, with one neck twisted under the other and talons outstretched mid-strike.

Me: They need a thought-bubble above them that says, "I'm gonna rip you limb-from...Look! A squirrel!"
T: I think our chickens have ADHD.

I-Need-Therapy-Thursday: Time Out

I'm so bummed.

After 15 years of being away, I'm starting back to work again soon.

And while the thought of giving up a good chunk of "free" time is making me bummed, part of what bothers me is that I think I'm going to have to cut back in bloggy world.

I think, I think I'll be able to continue with my regular schedule. But one of the things that eats up a BIG chunk of time with all this is replying to comments. Not because I'm writing well thought-out responses, but b/c my stinkin' internet is so bad that every time I hit "reply", I have to wait like 30 seconds to get the box, and then as soon as I type out the first few words, the whole box goes up in smoke and I have to start over again.

Ugh.

So, although it makes me feel sad, and incredibly rude, I'm probably going to have to stop replying to comments.  Wah.

Now, if you need me to answer a question, you can always email me (farmbeachgal@yahoo.com) or leave me a message on FB, and I'll get back to you.  And I'll still be reading all your wonderful comments, I just won't be replying to them.

I'm so sorry.

I hope we can still be friends.
